(Jeff McIntosh/Canadian Press)The Detroit Red Wings extended their winning streak to five games with a 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
Centre Jiri Hudler kept his hot hand, scoring the winning goal in the third period to keep Detroit rolling.
After dropping two of the first four games of the season, the Red Wings are now 12-1-2 in their last 14.
"I'm ecstatic with our record," Detroit coach Mike Babcock told Hockey Night In Canada. "Guys have found a way on most nights to really bring it and that's a positive. We haven't been as good defensively as we want to be some nights but I think the big thing is we're finding ways to win and different people are finding ways to contribute."
Hudler snapped a 2-2 tie at 11:21 of the final period. With Calgary called for a delayed penalty, Hurdler quickly came off the bench and fired a slapshot over the glove of Calgary goaltender Mikka Kiprusoff.
It was Hurdler's third goal in his last two games, and 18th point in the past 15 contests.
Pavel Datsyuk added the insurance marker with 1:31 left, undressing Calgary defenceman Dion Phaneuf and sending a wrist shot between the legs of Kiprusoff.
Marion Hossa then chipped his 11th goal of the season into the empty net.
Kirk Maltby and Brett Lebda also netted tallies for the Stanley Cup champions. Goaltender Ty Conklin made 31 of 33 saves.
"It was a hard-working win," said Conklin. "We knew we were going to face an energized team and nothing less than our best was going to beat them."
The loss ended a two-game winning streak for the Flames (11-9-1), who rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third.
Calgary's Curtis Glencross and Mark Giordano provided the offence, while Kiprusoff made 32 saves in the loss.
The Wings opened a 1-0 advantage at 4:26 of the first period on Maltby's second goal of the season.
Detroit increased its lead by two goals at 11:46 of the second after Lebda was allowed to raced into the Calgary end and snap a shot to the far side of Kiprusoff.
The Flames cut the Wings' lead to one goal less than a minute later. Glencross emerged from the side of the Detroit net before squeezing the puck over Conklin on the short side.
Calgary evened the game 2-2 at 6:52 into the third period on the power play following a Detroit turnover in the neutral zone. Captain Jarome Iginla backhanded a pass to Giordano, who sent a wrist shot behind Conklin.
