Ottawa's Jarkko Ruutu is the second NHLer this week to be disciplined for a dangerous hit.

The Senators forward received a two-game suspension on Wednesday after elbowing Montreal's Maxim Lapierre early in the third period of Tuesday's 4-0 loss.

Ruutu, who was assessed a two-minute penalty for charging on the play, will forfeit almost $14,000 US in salary and will sit out a home-and-home series against the New York Islanders Thursday and Saturday.

On Monday, Tom Kostopoulos's check from behind against Toronto defenceman Mike Van Ryn was worthy of three games in the press box for the Canadiens forward.

Kostopoulos was assessed a five-minute boarding penalty and game misconduct after ramming the Maple Leafs blue-liner while the latter retrieved the puck in the corner during Saturday's contest.

He forfeited nearly $33,000 US in salary that will go to the NHL players' emergency assistance fund and is eligible to return Nov. 16 at St. Louis after missing games against Ottawa, Boston and Philadelphia.

In other Senators news Wednesday, right-winger Ryan Shannon was recalled from the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Binghamton.

With 12 points, Shannon ranked second in team scoring with the AHL club.

Acquired by the Senators from Vancouver on Sept. 2, the 25-year-old Shannon is in his third NHL season and fourth pro.

He split last season between Vancouver and its AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, and recorded a career-high five goals and 13 points in 27 games with the Canucks.

Shannon won a Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007 and has seven goals and 24 points in 80 NHL regular-season games.
