Brandon Sutter is helped by a Hurricanes trainer after being injured during the third period against the New York Islanders on Saturday night. (Ed Betz/Associated Press) Carolina Hurricanes rookie Brandon Sutter was discharged from a Long Island hospital Sunday, one day after being checked in the head and knocked unconscious.
The centre, 19, will return to Raleigh, N.C., where he will undergo further testing by the Hurricanes' medical staff later this week.
Doug Weight of the New York Islanders hit Sutter's head with his shoulder on the play during the third period of Carolina's 4-3 victory on Saturday night, leaving him on the ice for several minutes.
Weight was not penalized on the play but Carolina's Ryan Bayda took one for roughing as a scrum ensued. The Islanders would score with the extra man.
Also Sunday, Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said defenceman Joni Pitkanen, 25, suffered a torn meniscus in the same game.
Dr. Marty Isbell will perform surgery this week at Rex Hospital in Raleigh to repair Pitkanen's knee. Pitkanen is expected to miss three to four weeks of action.
Carolina (4-2-1) continues its six-game road swing, its longest of the seasn, at Montreal on Tuesday night.
