Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Friday.

Alfredsson had a bone chip in his knee dislodged during Ottawa's second game of the season, which took place in his native Sweden.

Senators general manager Murray said the team had been told that Alfredsson, 35, shouldn't be out of the lineup for more than a couple of weeks.

For his career, Alfredsson has scored 331 goals with 518 assists in 855 regular season games, all with Ottawa. He had two assists in the Sweden games, which the Senators split with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Alfredsson has missed just 35 regular season games in the previous six seasons.

"Certainly we're going to miss Alfie, he's out of our lineup, we're obviously a better team when he's in there, but it's a great opportunity for us to prove that we're different this year," said coach Craig Hartsburg.

"This is a group that wants to take great pride in being a team and doing whatever it takes. It's an opportunity for some people to step up, to do more. We don't need to change our plan, we're not going to change anything but this is a good challenge for us, and it's a great test right off the start to see how we react to it."

Ottawa hosts the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 6:30 p.m. ET).
