Petr Nedved's comeback attempt with the New York Rangers came to an end on Friday when he was let go by the club.

Nedved, 36, was looking to get back into the NHL after spending last season with Sparta Praha in the Czech Republic, but was not interested in spending time in the American Hockey League.

"This is probably the last for me in the National Hockey League," Nedved told the New York Post.

Nedved had two goals and an assist in preseason action but in addition to their returning forwards New York acquired several other players over the summer, including Markus Naslund, Patrick Rissmiller, Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche.

He had previously spent nearly seven seasons with the Rangers over two stints, dating back to 1994.

Nedved received limited minutes two seasons ago in the NHL, playing in 40 games split between the Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers.

Nedved was selected second overall in the 1990 NHL entry draft by the Vancouver Canucks.

He scored 310 goals and added 407 assists in 910 games in a career that included stops in St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Phoenix.

His best season was 1995-96 when he scored 45 goals and added 54 assists with the Penguins.

Born in Liberec, then in Czechoslovakia, Nedved became a Canadian citizen while playing for the Canucks. He was part of the Canadian team that won a silver medal at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.
