Former Stars GM Doug Armstrong, left, is expected to chat with the Maple Leafs. (Ron Heflin/Associated Press)It doesn't appear the Toronto Maple Leafs are any closer to hiring a new general manager, but the process is heating up.
In fact, as reported on Hockey Night in Canada's The Hotstove on Saturday, the Leafs hope to add three to four people to their hockey department within the next week or so, according to a source.
While the search for a general manager/president continues and will heat up as the playoffs come to an end, the Leafs under interim GM Cliff Fletcher are trying to improve the depth and quality of the front office.
"There is a dearth of talent in the Leafs front office and Cliff is trying to change that, to have a good operation in place for the new guy," said a source.
The Leafs have already spoken to former Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis and continue to show interest in putting him in the hockey department.
They are also going to speak to former Dallas Stars GM Doug Armstrong.
The Leafs had hoped to meet with former Florida Panthers consultant Joe Nieuwendyk, who resigned earlier in the season, but were refused permission until his contract expires June 30.
A source also indicated that if the Leafs aren't able to find "the right guy" to be GM, and if they are able to add the other bodies to the hockey department, a viable option would be for Fletcher to stay on for another year.
"There is a plan, no question, in terms of adding bodies," said the source. "Cliff will do whatever needs to be done until they get their GM, whether that's June, July, August or a year from now."
