Canucks trade for gritty Pettinger

The Vancouver Canucks parted ways with forward Matt Cooke on Tuesday, receiving winger Matt Pettinger in return from the Washington Capitals.

Pettinger, in his seventh year with the Capitals, scored two goals and five assists in 56 games with Washington, and will add grit to the Canucks' lineup.

Pettinger, an Edmonton native who grew up in Victoria, scored 16 goals last season and 20 goals two years ago. The 27-year-old winger has another year remaining on his $1.1-million contract.

Cooke, 29, has seven goals and nine assists in 61 games during his ninth season with the Canucks. He's earning $1.525 million and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The Capitals have been busy Tuesday's deadline, adding goaltender Cristobal Huet and forward Sergei Fedorov.
