NHL to begin 2008-09 season in Europe: report

Last Updated: Thursday, January 24, 2008 | 12:47 PM ET

The NHL is preparing to open next season with a series of games in Europe, according to a report.

The 2008-09 regular season will begin with the Ottawa Senators facing off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Stockholm, and the New York Rangers meeting the Tampa Bay Lightning in Prague, the Canadian Press reports.

The European games will be played before the rest of the regular-season schedule begins in North America.

All four teams are expected to play pre-season games in Europe as well.

The Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings faced off in the first two games of the 2007-08 campaign in London, England, in September, marking the first time NHL regular-season games were played in Europe.
