Avalanche's Smyth sidelined indefinitely

Feisty forward nursing sprained ankle suffered against Coyotes

Last Updated: Wednesday, January 2, 2008 | 3:49 PM ET

The Colorado Avalanche have lost three consecutive games and will be without two-thirds of their top forward line for the foreseeable future.

Ryan Smyth is out indefinitely after spraining an ankle in Monday's 4-3 shootout loss to Phoenix.

X-rays taken on Tuesday were negative but Smyth won't dress for Wednesday's matchup against the visiting Coyotes and is doubtful for Saturday's home contest versus the New York Islanders.

"We'll see how he responds to treatment over the next little while, and we'll have a better idea then," Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville told the Denver Post.

It was unclear how Smyth, who took a couple of big hits against the Coyotes, was injured.

Third in Colorado scoring with 28 points, he joins captain Joe Sakic on the sidelines. Sakic is out a minimum two months following hernia surgery last month.

Rookie T.J. Hensick has been recalled from the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League to take Smyth's roster spot. He has a goal and three points for Colorado.
