The Vancouver Canucks need to be reminded that they need to shoot to score.

Rod Brind'Amour set up two third-period goals as the Carolina Hurricanes skated to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Canucks in front of 15,532 fans at the RBC Center on Monday night.

Vancouver had prevailed in its previous five meetings with the Hurricanes, but hadn't visited Raleigh since Nov. 27, 2002.

"I thought we were very sharp in both areas [offence and defence] tonight," Hurricanes head coach Peter Laviolette said.

Cory Stillman, Chad Larose and Ray Whitney scored for the Hurricanes (5-1-3), who halted a modest two-game losing skid.

Cam Ward posted 19 saves in the win.

"The biggest thing is to push to score goals," Stillman said. "We have got to learn how to close teams out and, if you are up by two, to get the third goal."

Roberto Luongo recorded 29 saves and Brendan Morrison tallied the lone goal for the Canucks (4-5-0), who suffered their first loss in four road games this season.

"We were not pleased with our effort," Luongo said. "But we have been finding ways to win.

"I think that is what's missing right now. We're not finding ways to win on a consistent basis."

Vancouver was outshot 31-20 overall, marking the fifth time in nine games this season that the Canucks have had fewer than 25 shots.

"If you take away the shots after the first 11 minutes, the shots and the chances were about the same," Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said.

Stillman opens scoring

Vancouver was outshot 16-6 in the opening period by the Hurricanes, who opened the scoring on Stillman's power-play goal 5:07 into the second period.

It was Stillman's third goal of the season and came on a rising slapshot from the point.

"It is important for a power play to score," he said. "One a game or two a game will allow us to win a lot of hockey games."

It remained 1-0 until Brind'Amour collected the puck behind his net and threaded an outlet pass between two Canucks to spring Larose, who fooled Luongo high to the glove side for a breakaway goal at 7:01 of the third period.

The Canucks cut the deficit on a sterling effort by Brad Isbister, who gained control of the puck near the faceoff circle and skated around the net before setting up Morrison at the lip of the crease for his fourth with 6:41 left.

Whitney's third, an empty-netter with 33 seconds remaining, completed the scoring and sealed the victory for the Hurricanes.
