Veteran defenceman Sami Salo agreed Thursday to a four-year extension with the Vancouver Canucks.

Financial details were not disclosed.

Salo, who was slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, is making $1.5 million US this season.

"Sami is an elite defenceman who complements our group very well," Canucks general manager Dave Nonis said. "We are confident

that he will continue to perform at the high level he has established for himself."

Salo has posted career highs of 13 goals and 34 points in 63 games for the Canucks this season, his eighth in the NHL.

The 32-year-old also leads Vancouver with a plus-19 rating.

Salo has totalled 58 goals and 134 points in 470 games since being selected in the ninth round (239th overall) by the Ottawa Senators in the 1996 NHL draft.

He debuted with Ottawa in 1998 and was traded to Vancouver for Peter Schaefer on Sept. 21, 2002.
