A coach in Newfoundland is being investigated for allegedly instructing a player to slash another child during a game last month, a minor hockey official said Wednesday.

The game where the incident is said to have occurred involved seven- and eight-year-olds in the Conception Bay North minor league.

Jack Harrington, president of the Bay Arena Minor Hockey Association, said he doesn't know exactly what happened, but the association has already met with coaches to review proper behaviour.

"I spoke to the coaches, explained to them that as an association we take it very seriously," he said. "At the same time, it's a volunteer association … a lot of times emotions get involved, especially younger children. It's there now and we have to deal with it."

Harrington said a parent of one of the children has written the local hockey association complaining about the coach.

A player was allegedly slashed twice during the game.

The executive of the association plans to meet this weekend to discuss the incident.
