The Ottawa Senators' injury woes continued Thursday with the confirmation that forward Mike Fisher will be sidelined indefinitely with a left knee injury.

Fisher suffered the injury during Wednesday's 2-0 win over the New York Islanders on home ice late in the third period when he hit an Islander player.

The loss of Fisher is a big blow for an Ottawa team that has been playing without forward Jason Spezza, who is also out indefinitely with a knee injury.

"I took the body and hit the boards," Fisher told reporters Thursday in explaining how he injured himself.

"It's pretty sore and swollen today. It's an injury you can't control. A lot of these injuries look harmless but something goes out. I've just got to worry about getting back and having a good attitude. I've got to do my best at getting back as soon as possible. Hopefully, it's not too long."

Fisher had been playing on Ottawa's top line, alongside Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley, after Spezza, who leads the club in scoring with 43 points, injured his knee on Dec. 21 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In 38 games this season, Fisher has nine goals and 15 assists.

With two of his top forwards out, Senators coach Bryan Murray said he will give other players, namely Chris Kelly and Dean McAmmond, a chance to play on the club's top lines.

"Kelly is with the top line and McAmmond will be put into a regular rotation. These guys have a chance. When you lose Spezza and Fish, these are quality guys and they're hard to come by. Now everybody has to do their job. If mistakes are made, they're going to be magnified," Murray said.

Alfredsson said Ottawa must rally around the losses.

"Everybody has to chip in a little bit more and just play a little bit smarter," said the Senators captain. "Obviously it's a lot tougher but I think we know if we play together as a team and don't make too many mistakes we have a good chance of winning any game."

The Senators are also expected to recall centre Josh Hennesy from Binghamton, the club's American Hockey League affiliate.
