Quebec should have team at World Hockey Championship: lawyer

Well-known Quebec lawyer Guy Bertrand urged Premier Jean Charest Thursday to help him create a Quebec team to play in the 2008 World Hockey Championship.

Bertrand says having a team represent la belle province would be appropriate because part of the 2008 championship will be played in Quebec City.

Bertrand has already approached Hockey Canada with the idea, but was turned down because Quebec is not a country.

The lawyer, who has returned to his sovereigntist roots after publicly stating his support for federalism for many years, says Quebec should be allowed its own team because it is a nation with the right to be represented at international sporting events.

Bertrand plans to approach Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson again with the idea, which he believes is possible under tournament regulations.

A Team Quebec could play in a preliminary round against Team Canada, and the winner would go on to represent the country at the world championships.

That approach was used during the 2006 World Curling Championship, when a Quebec team represented Canada against Scotland.

The 2008 World Hockey Championship will be played in part in Halifax and then in Quebec City, to help the provincial capital celebrate its 400th anniversary.
