It's not Miller, it's the Flyers

The Flyers weren't all that disappointed with how they played in Game 1 against the Buffalo Sabres.

If James van Riemsdyk doesn't hit the post in the opening period, there's a goal. If Jeff Carter has better aim at the end, there's another goal.

From the Flyers standpoint as they go into Saturday's rare 5 p.m. ET start for Game 2, it's all about getting more shots on Sabres goalie Ryan Miller and getting him to move a bit.

"We got in there, but we didn't get our hands on the rebounds," Danny Briere said. "[Miller] was good, but we can probably do a better job of screening him.

"It was one of those nights where the puck didn't want to find its way behind him, but if we come up with the same effort, I think we'll be fine."

This would seem to be a "must" win for the Flyers who don't want to go to Buffalo down 0-2. Then again, they were down 0-2 to Boston last year coming home to Philly.

"You're on limited time here in the playoffs," coach Peter Laviolette said. "You only get so much of it to make your mark. If you don't make your mark, then you don't get to go on and continue."

Briere agrees.

"It's a big game for us to get back to even," he said. "We know we can win on the road, so that's a positive. But it's a big one. We definitely don't want to be in the hole, two-zip."

Mostly Miller

As good as the Sabres appeared to play, the truth is, they didn't.

Miller kept them in the game. The Flyers spent a lot of time in the Sabres end. They clearly outskated the Sabres, too.

"We know we can be better," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said. "We played a strong game, but I think we can play a better game.

"Offensively, we didn't spend the time in the offensive zone we wanted, and I think we really have to get after this one."

The Boos. They were raining down on the Flyers in Game 1 during their last couple of  power plays when they weren't getting shots off. Some of the Flyers couldn't understand it.

The fans aren't booing the effort. They're booing the fact the Flyers weren't shooting the puck, seemed hesitant with it and were trying to find passing lane that weren't there.

"I think they are just frustrated, I think a lot of people had questions on how we were going to respond after our February and March and even though we didn't win, I think everyone would agree this is a big difference from the way we played the last 20 games," Sean O'Donnell said.

"I think the fans are just frustrated. They have waited for a winner for a long time here, and the city has teased them a little bit. I think they just got frustrated with the game that we weren't scoring."

Power plays.  The score sheet shows it was 5-1 in favour of the Flyers. Hence, guys like Buffalo's Tyler Ennis and Thomas Vanek and Paul Gaustad didn't get enough minutes on the ice, five on five.

"We turned over quite a few pucks on entries that didn't allow us enough zone time," Ruff said. "We spent a lot of time in the neutral zone, and that hurt us. With penalties in the game, the penalty killers' time went up. Our offensive guys' time went down."

Buffalo did an outstanding job in Game 1 blocking shots in front of the net.

"That's what I said, the team defense as a whole; you can start with Millsy [Miller] and move on up," Patrick Kaleta said.

"Out penalty kill did a fantastic job. Like I said, in order to win here, we need our whole team and everyone's got to come together.

"We know we can play better and we are going to learn from tonight and move forward."
