The San Jose Sharks are the first team to advance to the second round of the NHL playoffs. The Sharks moved on by beating the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on home ice on Thursday. San Jose won the best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final 4-1. The victory will also net the Sharks' players some rest. The conference semifinals probably won't begin for a week.

   Analysis
Hockey Night in Canada's Kelly Hrudey:
Kelly Hrudey
One of the problems I would have with St. Louis is that they had to expend so much energy to get themselves back into the playoff race after the firing of Joel Quenneville – not only physical energy but emotional energy because the firing caught them off guard. You have to give them credit because myself and a lot of other people didn't think they'd be able to regroup and come back and make the playoffs.

For San Jose, two years ago, everyone thought they were a leading contender for the Stanley Cup. They failed miserably last year and it's as though people are surprised they're back in it again so soon. But I think the Sharks need to forget about their past playoff history because it's not all that rich. They need to build from now and form their own identity. It's a different team now, it's a younger team with young leaders.
