Impact Players - Game 7

Mark Recchi
Why? Recchi paced the Flyers attack with two goals and one assist.

Ed Belfour
Why? Belfour found himself under siege but battled gamely.

Hockey Night in Canada's Harry Neale:

This is a real coin toss. You might be a little more enthused about Toronto's chances if they had all thier injured players back.

The Leafs may get a lot of players back during the run of the series, but a lot of them haven't played often lately and the playoffs are not an easy time to start playing again. With some hesitancy, I'm picking the Flyers over the Leafs

Prediction: Philadelphia wins series in seven games

Like the New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia is another member of the Eastern Conference elite whose outstanding season was overshadowed by the Ottawa Senators' superb campaign. The Flyers went 7-1-2 in October and were consistently strong all season.

With Ken Hitchcock holding the reins, the Flyers were predictably strong defensively, giving up 166 goals all season. Only the New Jersey Devils allowed fewer goals. The Flyers allowed two goals or fewer in 12 of their past 13 games.

Offensively the Flyers were well down the list, finishing in a tie with the San Jose Sharks for fifteenth in the league. General manager Bobby Clarke tried to rectify the team's scoring woes at the trade deadline, acquiring Tony Amonte from the Coyotes. After struggling in Phoenix, Amonte came alive after joining the Flyers, tallying 15 points in 13 games with the Flyers down the stretch.

Roman Cechmanek had his third straight strong regular season. But the question marks surrounding him will only disappear if he can perform in the playoffs. Cechmanek and back-up Robert Esche have just three playoff wins between them.

The boo birds were out in full force when the Leafs got out of the gate slowly, going just 3-6-2 in October.

Goaltender Ed Belfour, taking over from the very popular Curtis Joseph, took the brunt of the fans' displeasure.

But the Eagle turned the jeers into cheers soon enough. Belfour is a big reason the Leafs finished as well as they did, keeping the often punchless Leafs in the game until the offence found its scoring touch. Belfour finished with 37 wins and a 2.26 GAA.

Like the Flyers, the Leafs loaded up on help for the playoffs at the trade deadline, adding Owen Nolan, Doug Gilmour, Phil Housley and Glen Wesley.

So far, only the Nolan addition has paid dividends, as the other three struggled through injuries. However both Housley and Wesley should be back for the first round.

First liners Mats Sundin and Gary Roberts also suffered injuries late in the season, but will be back for the Flyers.

Season Series
Season series tied 2-2

The Leafs pounded the Flyers 6-0 and 3-0 in games in November. But the Flyers won the last two by 3-1 and 2-1 scores. Starters Ed Belfour and Roman Cechmanek really only went head-to-head in one contest, a 2-1 Philadelphia win.

The Leafs' penalty kill was perfect against the Flyers, killing off all 13 opportunities that the Flyers had. No single player on either team stood out for particularly strong play during the season series.

No Flyer had more than two points against the Leafs. Alex Mogilny and Darcy Tucker both had four points apiece against the Flyers.
