Impact Players - Game 6
Martin Brodeur
Why? After a rare down night in Game 4, bounces back with another shutout.
Glen Murray
Why? One of the key suspects in the Bruins offensive power outage. After tallying 92 regular season points he notched just 2 points and was -3 in playoffs.

Hockey Night in Canada's Harry Neale:

New Jersey is going to beat Boston.

The Bruins have trouble in goal and I don't like their defence corps as a group. On the positive side they are getting (Sergei) Samsonov back, who will give them a little offence and they could use that. But New Jersey will stifle them.

Prediction: New Jersey wins series in five games

Out of the spotlight for much of the year, the New Jersey Devils put together an outstanding season (46-20-9-6). Month in and month out, the Devils have been one of the league's most consistent squads, dropping as many as three games in a row only once all season.

Unfortunately for the Devils, their sixth 100-point season in seven years was overshadowed by the Senators. Under head coach Pat Burns the Devils are demons on defence. Netminder Martin Brodeur should finally win the the first Vezina Trophy of his 10-year National Hockey League career. Brodeur posted his fourth straight 40-win season (41-23-9) and had a stingy 2.02 GAA with nine shutouts.

The Devils put the defensive squeeze on opponents during March and April, giving up three or more goals just twice.

If there are any questions surrounding New Jersey, it is on offence. Just two years ago Patrik Elias lit up NHL goalies to the tune of 40 goals, and added 56 assists. This year he'll finish with just 27 goals and 56 points.

Unlike Eastern rivals like Philadelphia and Toronto, New Jersey did little to boost its offence at the trade deadline. Their only additions were the gritty Grant Marshall and Richard Smehlik.

Two versions of the Bruins showed up for 2002-03. Boston was red-hot early on, going 16-3-3-1 through to the end of November. From there on the team was mediocre the rest of the way and limped home to a final record of 36-31-11-4.

The swoon cost head coach Robbie Ftorek his job. GM Mike O'Connell fired Ftorek and got behind the bench himself on Mar. 21, although the Bruins went just 3-3-3 under him.

Inconsistency in goal plagued the Bruins for much of the season. After saying good-bye to free agent Byron Dafoe before the season began, the Bruins started with a platoon of Steve Shields and John Grahame.

Grahame was eventually sent to the Lightning and the Bruins acquired Jeff Hackett from Montreal. But Hackett's winning ways in Montreal didn't follow him to Beantown. Shields picked up his play as the season wound down and will likely be the starter against the Devils.

The Bruins got an offensive boost at the end of the regular season when Sergei Samsonov returned after missing 50 games because of a wrist injury.

Samsonov scored a goal and an assist in his first game back.

Season Series
New Jersey won the series 2-1-1

The two teams were closely matched during their regular season meetings with three of the contests being just one-goal games and one tie.

In a playoff preview on Apr. 3, the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie. Steve Shields made 28 stops, including five in overtime for the Bruins. Jeff Hackett played against the Devils four times this season (twice with the Habs and twice with the Bruins) and gave up a total of 14 goals.

Joe Thornton and Martin Lapointe were the Bruins' best players against the Devils, potting three goals apiece.

The Devils' top scorer, Patrik Elias scored just once, and was a -3 against the Bruins.
