Jean-Sebastien Giguere

Hockey Night in Canada's Kelly Hrudey:

This is a tough matchup for Detroit. Anaheim is a lot better team than people realize. They get a lot of mileage out of their goaltender (Jean-Sebastien) Giguere -- he's going to have to be very hot to stop the Wings' offence.

Detroit has depth and experience on its side. They also realize that you should try to win games in a series as quickly as possible so they get rest. I think Detroit will win but this is going to be a pretty entertaining series.

Prediction: Detroit wins series in six games

The Wings were consistently strong all season under first-year head coach Dave Lewis, who took over the reins from retired legend Scotty Bowman.

Detroit's only dry spell came during a 5-9-2-1 slide in January and early February.

The Wings' biggest off-season addition, goaltender Curtis Joseph, quietly posted strong numbers between the pipes.

Sergei Fedorov led the club in scoring for the first time since 1995-96 with 83 points. The talented centre was among the NHL leaders in shots on goal and game-winning goals, guiding the Wings' to the most goals scored in the NHL. Fedorov was followed in team scoring by goals leader Brett Hull and perennial Norris Trophy candidate Nicklas Lidstrom.

The Wings were buoyed late in the season by the return of 37-year-old captain and inspirational leader Steve Yzerman. The NHL's longest-serving captain missed most of the season recovering from knee surgery, but is back to help his team defend its championship.

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim quietly put together the best season in the club's 10-year history. The Ducks set team records with 40 victories and 95 points.

Anaheim's most valuable player patrolled the pipes in 2002-03. Jean-Sebastien Giguere had 34 of the Ducks' 40 wins and posted a 2.30 goals-against average, .920 save percentage and eight shutouts.

Ducks captain Paul Kariya also thrived on a bounty of scoring options up front. Kariya finished with 81 points in 82 games, a 24-point improvement from last season over the same number of contests.

The arrival of Petr Sykora (34 goals), Adam Oates (45 points in 67 games) and the mid-season acquisition of offensive-minded defenceman Sandis Ozolinsh provided the extra scoring punch to help Kariya.

The Ducks also added forwards Rob Niedermayer and Steve Thomas for their playoff run at the March trade deadline. Thomas turned red-hot, scoring 13 points 13 in 12 outings, including three game-winning goals.

Season Series
Detroit won the season series 3-1-0-0

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim have qualified for the playoffs three times in their 10-year history. Each time they've faced the Detroit Red Wings. The Ducks lost the first two postseason matchups and fell 3-1-0 in the 2002-03 regular-season series.

Detroit captured the first three contests this season, which included a pair of tight-checking 2-1 games at Joe Louis Arena in November and December. But Anaheim rebounded to take the final encounter 4-1 on March 9. Centre Samuel Pahlsson recorded his first career three-point game to snap Detroit's eight-game winning streak.

Each team offered a balanced attack in the meetings, as five Ducks finished with three points apiece while four Detroit players added three points each.
