Athletes use Twitter. Not all of them, of course, but those who take the few moments to send a message/tweet often entertain and, occasionally, provide insight.
(Although with only 140 characters there is only so much that can be said)
With that in mind, we’re going to take a regular a look at some athlete tweets from a variety of sports that are worth reading even if you still think a "tweet" is something a bird does when it's irate.
Disclaimer: Since we can't possibly write "sic" next to every misspelled word in the preceding tweets (or can we?), please consult your nearest acronym dictionary. It is Twitter, after all!
Let’s begin with Phoenix Coyotes winger Paul Bissonnette. He may only have six points in 61 career NHL games to go along with 149 penalty minutes, but his online persona "BizNasty2point0" has garnered nearly 18,000 followers.
On Thursday, he took his antics to a new level.
After the NHL announced a new all-star game format (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2010/11/10/sp-shanahan-allstar-game.html) where captains would choose their team, "BizNasty2point0" decided to create his own version: "Since I'm going to b All star captain, I need to start thinkin of my team. I will pick my team as if I were the only one on it. #MyDreamTeam"
Interesting starting centre
His most unusual selection came first: "My starting center. The legend himself. Got to share the ice with him in phoenix for training camp." http://twitpic.com/35wuwk
Bissonnette went on to select Evgeni Malkin and Patrick Sharp as Kyle Wellwood's wingers, Hal Gill and Adam Foote (his favourite player) on defence and Grant Fuhr between the pipes.
He put himself on the second all-star line with his "bromance" Taylor Pyatt, along with Sid the Kid, Mike Green, Keith Yandle and an unexpected goalie, Ray Emery.
Why? "It will be a 5 man cycle in the offensive zone. It'll look like the harlem globetrotters. Boom... Back up goalie. Ray emery. Cause if it gets ugly. This guys coming off the top ropes. And he played for my hometown welland cougars."
I guess you could call his third line the "grind line" with the likes of Arron Asham, Dan Carcillo and Lenny Dykstra.
Yes, former Major League Baseball player Lenny Dykstra.
"3rd d pairing. Larry murphy aka alligator blood. The guy had mad patients. and derek engelland, the only man to ever beat up chuck norris... 3rd goalie. Ron hextall, cause we may need his offensive presence. And he also throws down."
To fill out his roster, Bissonnette selected "Seabass aka Cam Neely," Wendel Clark and Lanny McDonald with Bill Clinton as the team's head coach. And his final all-star game-related line was the top re-tweet on Twitter: "My healthy scratches will be Gretzky and Lemieux because God isn't availalable to play on a line with them that weekend."
Not only were BizNasty's creative tweets re-tweeted and discussed all over Twitter, but it even got other NHLers talking...
It’s unusual to get so many contributions from the NHLers. Here's a look at some other interesting athlete tweets...
