Jets standout rookie Mark Scheifele will have No. 55 on the back of his sweater when Winnipeg opens its season against the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday.

The seventh overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft originally sported No. 45 during training camp, but stepped out onto the ice Tuesday morning with 55 on the back of his helmet.

The 18-year-old centre hinted a number change Monday after signing an entry level contract with the Jets. Scheifele opted to go with No. 55 since his favourite number 19 is taken by Jets veteran Jim Slater.

Scheifele wore 55 in his minor hockey days.

Also, Jets jerseys hit shelves for the first time Tuesday. The authentic version of the sweaters were available for fans to pick up at the Jets' team store at the MTS Centre.
