Maxim Afinogenov and Miroslav Satan each scored hat tricks on Wednesday as the Buffalo Sabres pounded Washington 7-1 at HSBC Arena.

It was the ninth time in Sabres history that two of their players scored three or more goals in the same game. Interestingly, the last time it happened was 11 years ago - also on New Year's Eve.

Afinogenov notched his first career three-goal game late in the second, while Satan's fifth career hat trick came early in the third.

Andrew Peters added his first career NHL goal and Martin Biron made 25 saves for the Sabres, who won for the third time in four games overall. For Biron, it was his only win in December, as he was 1-7-2 in his 10 previous starts.

Dmitri Kalinin and Derek Roy both finished with two assists for the Sabres.

Satan has been a Capitals killer, scoring 23 goals in 31 career goals against Washington, including six goals in three games this season.

Jeff Halpern scored for the Capitals, who lost their third straight. Maxime Ouellet stopped 35 of 42 shots.
