Dion Phaneuf will be joining team Canada at the IIHF world championship and not a moment too soon.

The hard-hitting Calgary Flames blue-liner willcompensate forthe blow Canada suffered when defenceman Shea Weber was suspended three games for a hit on a German player Saturday.

Weber still has two games left in his suspension.

Phaneuf, 22, had a great sophomoreseason, contributing 17 goals and 33 assists in 79 games with the Flames this year. He had one point and was minus-4 in the Flames' first-round playoff loss to Detroit.

The Edmonton native initially declined an invitation to join Team Canada in Russia because of an injury that since has healed.

The six-foot-three, 213-pounder won a gold medal with Canada at the 2005 world junior hockey championship.
