After suffering severe head trauma at a hockey practice, Alberta minor hockey coach Ron Ebbesen died at Calgary's Foothills Hospital on Tuesday.
Ebbesen fell and hit the back of his head on the ice during an Oct. 7 practice with his Strathmore midget AAA team.
He had been in hospital since the fall.
Six days before Ebbesen's accident, coach Mike Peters of Medicine Hat, Alta., fell and hit his head on the boards. Peters is being treated at Calgary's Foothills Hospital.
These and other incidents have sparked a debate over helmet use among minor hockey coaches.
Earlier this fall, hockey associations, including Hockey Calgary, implemented regulations making it mandatory for coaches to wear helmets during practice. Suspensions were being given to those who did not comply.
Ebbesen's family has not yet announced funeral arrangements.
