Breakout: 2-on-0
Purpose: To create a scoring opportunity by moving the puck out of the defensive end into the offensive zone, works on stickhandling, lateral movement, speed, passing and filling lanes.
- The right defenseman starts with the puck behind the net in the defensive zone
- RD passes the puck to RW waiting on the right side of the ice along the boards at the hashmarks
- RD makes the pass by wringing the puck along the boards to the awaiting winger
- While that pass is being made, LD skates from the high slot toward the middle of the defensive zone
- LW trails LD and then curls towards the left side of the ice, streaking along the boards
- Once the first pass is made, the next pass is made from RW to LD

- After RW passes, RW immediately skates toward the middle of the defensive zone
- LD picks up the pass and immediately passes back to the approaching RW heading over to the right side of the ice
- RW controls the puck and skates to the defensive blueline
- At the blueline RW passes over to LW, streaking up the left boards
- LW should be near or at the red line, ready to enter the offensive zone
- LD will move into the offensive zone with LW
- LD should be skating along the right side of the ice, matching LW stride for stride
- This creates a 2-on-0 with the three remaining teammates (C, RW and RD) trailing
- Run the drill on both sides, ie: with streaking RW
- Anothing variation on the drill includes adding backcheckers and defencemen to challenge the puck carrier and other offensive players.
