• Hockey Avalanche of confusion Let me be the first one to say that last season I was raving about the Colorado Avalanche as an example of how to rebuild an NHL franchise.  Good drafting, successful development, smart free-agent signings, some good veterans and perhaps the most elusive ingredient, powerful chemistry that both players and coaches could feel.  It oozed from them. You play for your country in the world junior tournament, become the first pick overall (as a goaltender no less) in the NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders and on draft day they trade both Roberto Luongo and yours truly. You get fast tracked to the league and play roughly 100 games in the minors. You represent your country in world championships and your father is a Vietnam veteran who served your country. You become the franchise player for the Islanders, evolve into an NHL all-star, sign 'the contract' then boom - the dreaded injury bug puts your career in complete uncertainty. How was Brent Sutter going take a team that had little, if any, structure and systems and make it better? What about Jarome Iginla having another one of his notoriously slow Octobers? How come Olli Jokinen hasn't found a comfort level on the ice as a Flame? Can Miikka Kiprusoff a.k.a. ' Kipper' play almost 80 games? There's no proven backup. Jussi Jokkinen is the Mr. Shootout of all shooters in the 'National'! He's scored the most goals - 36, to be precise - since the inception of the shootout in 2005.
