Nothing's clear when it comes to Winnipeg
If there's one thing we've learned about Winnipeg, Phoenix or Atlanta, it's anyone who claims they know what's going to happen is kidding themselves, and you.
All I can say is this: When the Winnipeg rumours surfaced last season, plenty of people who know a helluva lot more than I do said such discussion was premature. Now, those same people believe that while relocation is not the NHL's preferred option, there is a realization the time is coming.
On Sunday, The Arizona Republic reported the Coyotes have lost $40 million US this season. That would push Matthew's Hulsizer's purchase price to $210 million. Of course, Hulsizer might not be able to close the deal because Glendale's about to become Lawsuit City in its battle with corporate watchdog The Goldwater Institute.

Deadline restraint, plus 30 thoughts
You hear it from NHL GMs all the time: "If you want to make a deal at
the deadline, be prepared to overpay." Or, "There are more bad deals
made at the deadline than good ones."
But, for the first time in recent memory, 2011 appears to be the exception. What happened here? Why was their so much restraint?
In conversations last night with several executives and agents, two theories emerged.

Of everything I heard at the Heritage Classic, the quote that stood out most came during a discussion about the NHL's wish to hold even more outdoor games:
"That shows you how much money they're making."
It is believed that a "Stadium Series" (for lack of a better term) will be a focal point of the next U.S. television contract, with several in a row highlighting the package. Can't imagine that, in the long term, outdoor game after outdoor game will be a good thing for TV viewership, but I'm just a talking head, not an executive.
Fact is, there is incredible demand amongst NHL ownership for these.

The morning after the Canadiens and Bruins brawled in Boston - complete with goalie fight - the Devils played in Toronto. The players' reaction at the two teams' morning skate? "We need more of that in our league," was a pretty common answer.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are 6-4-2 at home with Tampa Bay (29th in goals against), Edmonton (30th) and Boston (2nd) coming to town. Toronto has 15 goals in its last four home games.
Despite that, they are 13th in the Eastern Conference, seven points out of a playoff spot. They still have 60 games to play, but, in the post-lockout NHL, falling behind that far this early is very dangerous. Three-point games make these pits difficult to escape.
