We at CBCSports.ca will be keeping an eye on the next generation of
NHL stars on Canada's seven clubs, whether they're working on the "farm"
in the AHL or honing their game overseas, waiting for the end of the
lockout.
We at CBCSports.ca will be keeping an eye on the next generation of NHL stars on Canada's seven clubs, whether they're working on the "farm" in the AHL or honing their game overseas, waiting for the end of the lockout. We'll periodically check in with these players throughout the 2012-13 season, no matter what league they'll be lacing up their skates in. Today, we check in with the Winnipeg Jets' young sharpshooter, Mark Schiefele.Mark ScheifeleAge/ Birthplace: 19, Kitchener, Ont.
Position: C
NHL club/draft position: Drafted 7th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 2011
NHL GP: 7
Junior team: Barrie Colts
Current team: Barrie Colts (OHL)
Stats on current team: 27GP, 21G, 23A, +13, 13 PIM
Since we last checked in with Scheifele, he's played 12 more games with the Colts... and scored 13 goals and added eight assists in that time. That tally includes this
hat trick and an assist effort in a 5-3 win over the Soo Greyhounds on Nov. 24.
It's this type of offensive production that made him a lock for
Canada's world junior roster for the upcoming tournament in Ufa, Russia, starting on Dec. 26.
Just whether or not he's available (because of that whole pesky NHL lockout) is yet to be seen, but his past work at the tourney (3G, 3A in six games in last year's bronze medal win) has many Canadians excited about the possibility of the team bringing home gold once again.
