The Edmonton Oilers sent defenceman Denis Grebeshkov to the Nashville Predators for a draft pick on Monday, in what could be the first of a number of trades for the last-place club.

The draft pick is a second rounder for the NHL entry draft in June.

Grebeshkov has six goals and 13 assists in 47 games this season for Edmonton.

The 26-year-old was originally acquired by the Oilers from the New York Islanders in the 2006-07 season when he was playing in his native Russia.

He came to Edmonton the following season and was signed last summer to a one-year deal worth just over $3 million US.

Grebeshkov began his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings and has 16 goals and 66 assists in 223 regular season games.

The Oilers announced the trade through their Twitter feed. The club has a number of veterans that could be attractive to other clubs looking to stock up before Wednesday's trade deadline.
