The Ottawa Senators begin life without captain Daniel Alfredsson, who jumped ship as a free agent this summer to join the Detroit Red Wings.

Head coach Paul MacLean might look to centre Jason Spezza and defenceman Erik Karlsson to fill the leadership void.

In Calgary, goalie Miikka Kiprusoff has retired, while the Flames won't have Jarome Iginla for a full season for the first time after the longtime captain was traded to Pittsburgh and subsequently joined the Boston Bruins as a free agent on a one-year deal.
