The Canadian junior team is preparing for the tournament in Russia at a selection camp in Calgary. Observations from the exhibition game Thursday won 2-0 by Canada over the CIS squad.

  • After five cuts on Wednesday (Adam Pelech, Sean Monahan, Francis Beauvillier, Derrick Pouliot, Tyler Graovac) Canadian junior head coach Steve Spott and his staff needed to trim a goalie, three defencemen and four forwards later on to get down to the final 23-player roster
  • The final cuts included goalie Laurent Brossoit, defencemen Matthew Dumba, Frank Corrado and Ryan Sproul as well as forwards Daniel Catenacci, Mark McNeill, Hunter Shinkaruk and Tom Wilson
  • Dumba missed a breakaway attempt coming out of the penalty box. Ty Rattie put a backhand over the goal on a breakaway in the third period
  • Brett Ritchie missed an open net with less than two minutes remaining after the CIS team pulled goalie Jake Paterson
  • Halifax’s 17-year-old forward Jonathan Drouin continues to impress
