Injured head coach Lindy Ruff won't be behind the Buffalo Sabres bench for Wednesday's game against the Boston Bruins.

Assistant James Patrick will assume Ruff's duties. Patrick normally oversees the defencemen.

Ruff broke three ribs when he was upended by defenceman Jordan Leopold in an on-ice collision during Monday's practice.

In his 14th season with the Sabres, Ruff last missed a game in March 2006 when he stayed home to be with his daughter, who was ill.

Patrick also said Ruff was hoping to be at the game, and will either watch live from the press box or in his office on television.
