McElhinney, who turned 30 on Thursday, has appeared in 69 career NHL games with the Calgary Flames, Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators. He has a 19-26-4 record, with a 3.09 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage. In 2012-13, he went 29-6-3 with nine shutouts in 49 games with Springfield of the American Hockey League.
It's uncertain when he'll come off the IR.
The 29-year-old, who has played in 69 career games with the Calgary Flames, Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators and Phoenix Coyotes, offers a third option in net. The Blue Jackets have struggled with goaltenders since making their lone playoff appearance in 2009. Steve Mason, the Calder Trophy winner that year who has floundered since, is still under contract. The club recently traded with Philadelphia to obtain 23-year-old Sergei Bobrovsky.
