Shortly after Hedman passed the puck in the neutral zone, Lupul left his feet while lunging into Hedman from the side. Lupul's lower left shoulder struck Hedman in the side of the head.
It was his first game since suffering a broken forearm in a road win over Pittsburgh on Jan. 23.
Lupul is now signed through to the 2017-18 season. Sunday's deal comes a day after Lupul was picked as one of the Leafs' alternate captains.
