The Montreal Canadiens blueline took another significant hit as the team announced on Thursday that defenceman Jeff Petry would require season-ending surgery for a sports hernia.

The 28-year-old has missed the last seven matches after suffering the injury in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Feb. 7.

He recently returned to practice, but was listed day-to-day before the announcement. He has five goals and 11 assists in 51 games this season.

Montreal also announced Thursday that defenceman Tom Gilbert will be out at least six months after having knee surgery on Wednesday.
