Dallas Eakins started his new NHL coaching job this season with a simple game plan.

The Edmonton Oilers head coach sat down with Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman for an interview that aired on the pre-game show Hockey Tonight on Saturday. Eakins shared his philosophies as a coach, including the first thing he said to himself upon arriving in Edmonton.

"If this team is going to win, they're going to have to do it my way," said Eakins, who became the franchise's 12th coach this summer after spending time with the AHL's Toronto Marlies.

Eakins went on to describe what he expects from his Oilers.

"Well, you're going to compete and you're going to compete hard. I don't know why you would ever come on the ice, whether if it's in a game or in practice, and not compete as hard as you could."
