Dion Phaneuf drops the gloves in return to Toronto
Former Leafs captain gets fighting major moments after tribute
Moments after a tribute video and warm ovation from the Air Canada Centre crowd, Dion Phaneuf wasted little time in changing the tone.
Phaneuf: "I just want to thank the fans for what they did. It meant a lot to me. That was some good closure. Real classy by them."—@markhmasters
During a television timeout early in first period on Saturday night, Phaneuf appeared emotional as he acknowledged the fans he played in front of for six-plus seasons as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
But in his first game in Toronto since being dealt to the Ottawa Senators, Phaneuf quickly changed gears when he picked up a fighting major for a dust up with Colin Greening. Fittingly, Greening was part of the package acquired by the Leafs in that blockbuster trade on Feb. 9.
