Armada edge Wildcats to get head start: CHL playoffs
Danick Martel scores twice for Blainville-Boisbriand
Armada 3, Wildcats 2
Danick Martel scored twice, including the eventual winner, and the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada held off a late Moncton comeback attempt to pull away with a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff action.
Ryan Tesink had a goal and an assist as the Armada took a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-seven set. Frederic Bergeron chipped in with two assists.
Will Smith and Ivan Barbashev scored for the Wildcats (0-1), and Stephen Johnson helped on both Moncton goals.
Blainville-Boisbriand goaltender Etienne Marcoux stopped 23 shots for the victory. Moncton's Alex Dubeau made 21 saves in defeat.
The Armada broke out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period as Tesink found the back of the net on a power play and Martel scored his first of the game nine seconds later. Martel made it 3-0 at 12:09 of the second period.
After two scoreless frames, the Wildcats came out firing in the third. Barbashev scored at 2:34 and Smith cut Blainville-Boisbriand's lead to one with his goal at 16:04.
The second game of the series goes Friday in Blainville.
Colts 3, Wolves 2
Kevin Labanc scored a goal and assisted on another as the Barrie Colts opened the Ontario Hockey League playoffs with a 3-2 win over the Sudbury Wolves.
Zach Hall scored the eventual winner at 16:32 of the second period, and Justin Scott also scored for the Colts (1-0). C.J. Garcia had two assists.
Nathan Pancel scored two for Sudbury (0-1), while Mathew Campagna chipped in with assists on both goals.
Barrie's Mackenzie Blackwood made 29 saves for the win. Wolves goaltender Franky Palazzese made 34 saves in the losing effort.
The Colts held Sudbury to just four shots on goal in the first period, and outshot the Wolves 37-31 in total.
Scott opened the scoring at 15:11 of the first period, and Barrie increased their lead to 2-0 with Labanc's goal at 2:19 of the second.
Pancel cut the deficit in half with his first goal of the game on the power play midway through the second period, but Hall's goal gave the Colts a 3-1 edge heading into the final frame.
Pancel scored his second of the night at 6:53 of the third.
The Colts host Sudbury for Game 2 on Saturday.
Kootenay 5, Calgary 2
Sam Reinhart scored two goals and assisted on another as the Kootenay Ice downed the Calgary Hitmen 5-2 to take Game 1 of their best-of-seven Western Hockey League playoff series.
Zach Franko also scored two for Kootenay (1-0), while Luke Philp had a goal and an assist. Jaedon Descheneau and Rinat Valiev had two assists apiece.
Brady Brassart and Greg Chase scored for Calgary (0-1), which was outshot 35-29.
Ice goaltender Mackenzie Skapski stopped 27 saves for the win. Chris Driedger stopped 30 shots, including a penalty shot midway through the second period off Deschenau, in the Hitmen's loss.
Chase put Calgary on the board first with a goal at 4:06 of the first period, but the Ice replied with five straight, including power-play goals from Reinhart, Philp, and Franko.
Brassart added a short-handed goal for Calgary at 19:00 of the third.
Kootenay was 3 for 7 on the power play while the Hitmen failed to score on their only chance with the man advantage.
Calgary hosts Game 2 on Saturday.
