The NHL Tuesday honoured Jaromir Jagr's ability to score goals and Mathieu Garon's ability to prevent them.

Jagr was named the NHL's offensive player of the month and Garon was named December's top defensive player.

Jagr led all scorers with 22 points while posting plus-6 rating in 13 games.

The Rangers, who currently sit second in the Atlantic Division, won six of their 13 games in December. Jagr was involved in 61 per cent of the team's goals during the month and notched six multiple-point games.

Overall, Jagr has 25 goals and 36 assists in 39 games, He's on pace to record the second-highest point total of his 15-year career.

Garon led all goaltenders in victories December. He posted a 9-3-0 record, 2.40 goals-against average and .924 save percentage.

The rookie goalie is a big reason why the Los Angeles Kings sit atop the Pacific Division. Garon's won all four of his starts against divisional opponents last month.

On New Year's Eve, Garon backstopped the Kings to a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars, Los Angeles' closest division rival.

Two days later he did it again. This time beating the Stars 3-2 in overtime.
