Hockey Night in Canada's Scott Morrison delivers his insights into the world of hockey, on and off the ice.

Ray Emery saga continues on

Comments (87)
By Scott Morrison

As much as the Ottawa Senators have insisted they do not have a controversy, it is a little like Chris Simon claiming he was… oh, never mind.

Fact is, the controversy exists and everything Ray Emery is doing these days confirms it.

And so the saga continues.

One day, not too long ago, of course, Senators coach John Paddock was openly questioning his goaltender's work ethic, especially when he failed to show up for an optional practice at a time when he was trying to get back to playing on a regular basis.

This past Thursday, after it had been confirmed that Martin Gerber would start for the seventh time in eight games later that same evening, on the heels of a wobbly start to boot, Emery hits the ice late for an optional practice and leaves in a hissy fit, sending water bottles flying with his stick, which was eventually pitched into the seats, as well.

That was followed up by comments from captain Daniel Alfredsson, who said the key to success, or in this case at least a return to action, is "to work hard in practice to show that you want to play."

Ouch.

Then on Friday morning, Emery turns up five minutes before practice only to be pointed back home by Paddock, who insisted his goaltender wasn't feeling well. That much we knew already, but now he is apparently also sick.

Whatever the day, whatever the story, the Senators have a problem. While some players have been indifferent (or is that guarded?) with their reactions, others such as Alfredsson have openly talked about Emery's questionable work habits.

Not that the controversy has affected the Senators overall play, but problems need to go away regardless because they can become a full-blown distraction. In this case, fixing it either means making the goaltender physically go away, or for him to resolve his issues with the team.

Trading the troubled goaltender may be possible, but realistically it is highly doubtful - especially with almost $7 million in salary on the table, plus what he is owed this year - that there is much of a market. And even if there is a taker, the return would not be good, not now, not under these circumstances.

It says here that Emery should feel miserable about not playing, that speaks to a competitive fire and that is admirable. But playing is also not a right, it is something that is earned, whether you helped to take a team to the Stanley Cup final or not.

If the coaches, and teammates, feel you aren't working hard enough to deserve a return to ice, then there is a very simple solution to the problem. Emery simply has to realize it and get to work. Literally.

Everyone says that he is acting childish and in a sense I agree, but if you were a the one in his position would you not act the same. First he takes over for Hasek when eh gets his groin injury in the 2005-2006 season and brings us to the play offs as a new goalie, then last year after we proved himself we get Gerber because he won the play offs and put him as number one once we craps out we let Emery play and he brings us to the Finals and yet again this year he is still not the number one. I don't think it is fair for either of the goalies having to fight and fear that if they lose the game they will not be in nets the next game.

As for the play offs this year blaming Emery for everything is ridiculous he didn't even play so how can it be he's fault. It was never Gerber's fault that we lost no he's just the one that lets the goals in, Murray didn't even give Emery a chance to show him what he is made of. I'm sure he was not the only one that was late or didn't show up for an OPTIONAL practice big deal but we don't seem to care about the other.

I think we should give him (Emery) one last chance then if he doesn't grow up and realize that this is not the way to go about getting ice time then by all means trade him.

The case here is a simple one. What we have here is a young 23 year old kid who is playing on one of the best teams in the game today, finally gets to play and has himself a good year. He then gets himself a nice contract to boot. Along with a nice fat bank account, plenty of playing time, lots of media coverage, comes an ego the size of the countries capital. As with many before his time, a young talented kid begins to succumb to the pressures and handles them in a negative way. What Emery needs is the people close to him to make him realize that its time for him to get off his so called high horse and do the job hes paid to do with no objections. If hes not getting the ice time that he feels he deserves then there is obviously a reason for that. No one sits a perfectly good goaltender unless warranted. Showing up late for parctice, not showing up at all, painting Mike Tyson on his mask, throwing tantrums, going from a regular down to earth guy into a flashy dresser riding all sorts of suped up rigs, garnering media attention for all the wrong reasons is gonna be his downfall...atleast in Ottawa. What is wrong with Ray Emery?...can it be summed up in two words? SWELLED EGO!

Emery simply needs to show up to work and work hard. He will have to wait for his chance to steal back the #1 job when gerber turtles under pressure...
Ottawa fans love Emery's tenacity but he currently sounds like a spoiled child. He had one marginally above average season with one of the best teams in front of him, he has a lot to prove and certainly is not doing himself any favours with his actions. He needs to listen to his captain, his selfish tantrums will only cause turmoil from within the team...hardly what you need from your backup goalie....

Ray Emery seems to be lacking a bite of maturity. It first came to light when he apparently had a confrontation in Ottawa, threatening a motorist. Now it appears to be carrying over to his hockey game. Ray Emery is my Grandson's hero and it is sad to say, but he doesn't appear to be much of a role model right now.

Goaltenders are a different breed BUT attitude and work ethic win games. I wouldn't trade Emery. I would simply negotiate a shipment down about two levels (below the AHL) and tell Mr. Emery to play himself into shape, both in his game and in his head. He would need to work his way back UP to the AHL, play 4-5 games and be ahead in the WIN column before being considered to be a back-up or starter for Ottawa.About 3 weeks on a bus and staying in minor league digs might change his mind about his attitude.

The only way to get back to being Number 1 is by working hard in practice to get back to your previous great level before you were hurt and being ready to step in when the chance comes. If the other guy is doing a great job, be patient, your chance will come.

A young man of 23 yrs with big salary and attention for the past year resulting in a big ego trip. After coming close to the Stanley Cup finals for the team he is the hero despite the second prize. Now we are motivated and aiming for another chance to get to another playoffs. We need to work together as a team and forget the ego trip. I want a stanley cup parade and I went to two in Montreal. I want one here in Ottawa and we can do it. Back Emery, Gerber and the rest of the Guys. If he does not pull through for us this year then trade him to someone who is willing to pay. For now let's focus and stop this childish antic and move on to professional sport athletes. It is a shame to not back the team. The season is not over yet it is only half way. Fans stand up and grow up and leave Emery alone.

i have followed in the news about the Ray Emery issue. As far as the reporting is concerned, it looks like Emery is resting on his laurels to get back to the #1 position between the pipes. Unfortunately childish fits, not showing or being late for practice and not making an effort is not the way to do it. there is no "i" in 'hockey team'. Emery needs to understand that. To maintain a leading role you have to always stay with it, work at it, endure the pain to gain.
And contrary to belief, Emery did not bring his team to the Stanley Cup finals last season, the entire team did!
But what goes on behind the dressing room door that doesnt get reported...we shall never know. Attitude and work ethics need to be changed...I AGREE with the Captain. PERIOD!

When your own captain calls you out in a public forum, it's not a good sign. I like Emery's style, panache, but he kinda lost me during the final with a blatant dive that was right out of something you'd see in soccer; bush league stuff all the way. For the millions he makes in salary, he can show up on time (buy a watch) and not act like a petulant brat. With all that being said, it's a long season and much can change between now and the playoffs.

Emery is more concerned with his suits and driving to practice in his flashy cars then prepping to WIN a game. He did not take the SENS to the CUP Finals. The TEAM took emery to the CUP Finals! (1 of the highest scoring team in the league) The TEAM made Emery look good, he never stole a game when it matters most. The series with the dirty ducks would have been a lot closer if Emery had stolen a game or two. His lateral movements, his rebound control is laughable. Crappy Tire Le Goalie would have yield the same result between the pipes. Was never an Emery fan and never will be.

What's the deal with people thinking Emery is owed this for past performances? Emery isn't playing well, but Gerber is. I don't care what Emery's excuse is, how well he played last year, or how much money he is making, he shouldn't be playing. Besides, Gerber played well a couple years back in the Olympics...I guess that puts him right back on top of Emery again, right?
Keeping him on the team is just another display from the Senators of why they will not win the Stanley Cup in my lifetime.

Emery has an attitude problem and I don't blame the coach for questioning his commitment to the team. Being the number 1 goalie is something that must be earned and when you are not playing well, you should expect not to be the starter.

By showing up late for practice, it shows a total lack of respect for the team and his team mates.

I think Kelly Hrudey made a very good point on Saturday's HNIC broadcast by saying that Emery's actions in coming late to practice is saying to his teammates that his time is more important than theirs.

When you are not starting games, that is when you need to work extra hard to show your coach that you want to get back into the starting lineup and that you deserve another chance.

Earlier in the week, Emery was quoted as saying that he has always had trouble being on time. This is just something that shows his lack of respect for his teammates.

If we as ordinary citizens were always arriving at work late, I don't think we would have a job anymore. Emery seriously needs to grow up and put the team first, any frustrations about not being the starter must be put aside.

Another thing is, a few months ago, Emery had a run in with an elderly gentleman on the road and he(Emery) was very disrespectful to this gentleman.

You really need to suck it up and put the Team 1st. For the amount of money he is being paid, he is certainly not acting in a professional manner.

It takes an exceptional goalie to win a Stanley Cup. Emery is not that goalie(worst rebound control of all time). The Emery contract was a mistake. In a 30 team league there is less than 10 goalies that I feel could go the distance. The Sens are a team that has more than enough talent in every department except goaltending. We got rid of Jacques Martin. Now let's hire an A+ goalie and get Ottawa fans what they deserve-
The Stanley Cup!!

Emery's behavior is tiring and does nothing for the NHL or for the Senators. Most NHL goaltenders would have played well with Ottawa last year...Emery was the benefactor of being a member of a great team and has always been overrated in my books. Gerber should have remained the starter last year as far as I am concerned. All goalies need time to work themselves out of a funk and need playing time to do it, and Gerber arguably would have done so if allowed an opportunity, and who knows, maybe Ottawa would have won the cup? As a Leafs fan, I have no right to diss Ottawa, but maybe the two teams should talk about swapping Raycroft and Emery. Both could do with an opportunity to prove themselves again in a new environment....at best unlikely given the divisional rivalry, but probably good for both teams at this point!

Kelly Hrudey hit the nail on the head last night when he pointed out that Emery's attitude is sending the wrong message to his teammates. In effect he's saying that it's all about him, that he's bigger than the team, and that his time is more valuable than anyone else's. That can't go unaddressed or unpunished. I wouldn't trade him I suspend him or demote him to the minors. Whatever it is they need to get rid of him before this side show wreaks havoc with the team's on ice performance.

As for last year, his performance in the playoffs was superb until the finals came along, then he was downright embarrassing. He scored on himself for crying out loud. Injusry or no, his confidence is shot, he's as lazy as it comes, a prima donna, and a narcissist to boot. Trade him for Raycroft!

Finally, Ottawa gets its hands on a "Number One" quality goalie, and they get TWO! In case you haven't noticed, it's a cyclic job ... look at Gigure after their failed playoff run in 2003 and his subsequent season.

The same fans calling for Emery to be traded are the same ones who were calling for Alfie to be traded last year. How would Ottawa be fairing today had they gotten rid of Alfie?

Just goes to show you...don't listen to the fans. If they knew what they were doing, THEY would be the ones behind the bench.

In John I Trust.

He did the same thing as a member off the Soo Greyhounds, and Craig Hartsburg sent him home. It was Harstsburgs first day as coach of the Hounds, Emery was late for the first day of training camp, and was told to get out of the rink. The story was huge at the time, but both Hartsburg and Emery were able to get through it, and Emery came back after that and helped Hartsburg win coach of the year in the OHL. It was a lesson at the time for not only Emery, but the whole team to realize they had to play by team rules.
Lets hope Ottawa doesn't give up on him yet, he's the real deal, and he will get back on the same page as the rest of the team.
If not, some team will have a great goalie if Ottawa trades him. He is a starter in his mind, and once they make him thier number one goalie, he'll play like he did last year, and as a junior.

Thats Quite a team that they've got in front of that #1 goalie their in Ottawa. Seven goals as a starter. Thats some super team and starting goalie. I hope that Toronto ends up with Emery and rubbs it in their face. They are such a good team in front of Emery. When he's down they need to be behind him and back him or trade him. I don't like either team but it seems to be that you're only important in Ottawa if you're a starter. That is why I don't like Ottawa.

It puzzles me to see the couch-hockey connoisseurs of Canada, be so quick to lay blame and cast judgement on Ray Emery. We tell our kids, if you have done wrong, stand up and be a man. Admit it and resolve to do better. The guy does that and everyone is on his back. Give the guy a break, push him with encouragement to do better. In hockey and as a man.
I watched tonight as a seemingly wiped out Leafs team, played in front of a very good goalie. The team showed little enthusiasm or focus and as a result, sold out on their goalie Andrew Raycroft to the tune of 4 powerplay handouts. Who gets the jeers and boos and is razzed as he's replaced? Raycroft. The shots were 29 to 12 for the Rangers at the time.
The overly priveledged hockey fans in the stands and those throwing stones at home, should maybe take a close look at both the bigger picture and where their heart is. Stand behind your players and believe in your team ...or give your tickets to the true fans who would love to be there cheering them on.

I think the Senators should take into consideration that Emery is a hockey player, good or bad, just the same as everyone else. Yeah he's gonna get sick, but hey, it's part of life. In that case, the Senators should just take it as it comes, and deal with it just like other teams have to when the "injury bug" hits. Yeah it's tough when you have him have an outstanding season one year, but then have a disappointing season after. It's all part of the business, and we should just accept it as part of life.

I feel that Ray Emery is bad example of what a professional hockey player should be. I understand the frustration of not being number one, but that is no excuse for showing up late for practice! He also said that he finds it hard to get motivated. Are you kidding me. Whether your league minimum or franchise player, you show up and support your team. There are thousands of kids that would play for sticks and hot dogs if it meant being in the show. Wake up, grow up, and show up Emery.

Gerber might be that REGULAR SEASON STATISTICAL OUT IN THE FISRT ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS PLAYER that Ottawa has grown to know and love throught the last 10 years that folds when the going gets tough.
Everybody forgets the begining of last season when Ottawa was playing bad and there was talk of getting rid of Alfredson and totally starting from skratch. The team had gotten Gerber even though Emery had good stats the year before. The Team year afer year finished high into the playoffs but never even came close to the Stanley Cup. Getting out MUSSELED buy Toronto in the first round time after time. Emery came in after Gerber played like Crap. He added the TOUGHNESS that Ottawa never had. Ottawa thoughout the last 10 years Ottawa was the best REGULAR SEASON team or the most Highly Consistant. Posting high in end of the Regular Season Standings. The FIGHT or Brawl in Buffalo was the turning point in the Season last year and INSPIRED THE TEAM. It showed teams like Toronto that Ottawa was ending its Decade of Imtimidation. Ottawas always had the talent throughout the years but never the Toughness. Throughout Alfredson's career he would never play Physical. The team had a Very European feel to it. Eupopean hockey is wonderful to watch but its style solely will not will you the Cup. It takes HEART. The ability to go into the corners knowing that Chris Pronger is going to knock your head off. Daniel Briere is a perfect example of what im taking about. A guy with Speed Skill and when the Playoffs beging he takes it straight to the much Larger players in the League Never Being Intimitated. Alfredson, Spezza, Yashin and others never understood that. I watched year after year in the playoffs once the Hitting turned up the just hid in the Closet. Emery inspired the whole team last year. I will agree though he is being a baby this year. Gerber waited his time and earned the job back respectfully. EMERY has took the team to the Cup where they had not been since the 1920's.

Emery deserves a fair shot at getting the number 1 spot back and he simply needs to do what Morrison suggests: work hard and show and prove.

Truth be told, I like the color, attitude and flare that Emery brings to the game. That attitude is what makes the MLB (read Barry Bonds, Many Ramirez...save the dope), NFL(read Chad Johnson) and NBA (read Charles Barkley, Gary Payton, etc) so interesting to follow. The Emery's and the Avery's represent the spice and daftness the NHL needs. The bland, stoic, penchant-for-the boring image the NHL has been towing for decades has gotten old.

And hogwash to the critics who say "you should be grateful you are making $7 million...shut-up and play". His attitude, temper, and panache is part and parcel why he's good when he's good. It's the fuel to his flame and it stokes his competitiveness. Unfortunately though, character's like Emery show frustration the only way they can when things go pear. It's the gamble teams take with players like Emery.

I think we'll see Emery return to form. He worked hard and fought his way to get him there the first time around. The media shots and at his ego and team pressure will fuel him to prove to people he's the number 1 man.

I wonder what the real full story is, Ray Emery didn't become a pro-athlete by mopping around and throwing hissy fits. I am 100% sure that all athletes do this at some point, but more in regards to their own performance.

There have always been goalies who hate to practice and yet are great on game day. Richard Brodeur of the Canucks rarely gave any effort at all during practice, but we didn't call him King Richard for nothing. Patrick Roy was as self-centred as anyone who ever played the game, but he wasn't a bad goalie. It's what Emery can do on the ice during a game that really counts. Goalies are some of the wierdest athletes in all of sports. They need special treatment. Let Emery prove his worth during a game, not during practice.

And lay of the "overpaid" comments, people. Sports salaries have nothing to do with reality. If you want value for the money, stop paying the ridiculous ticket prices and force the owners to change the way they do things. Don't blame the athletes for making money.

If memory serves, Ottawa brought in Gerber last year to start, with Emery as #2. An abysmal performance relegated Gerber to the bench. Neither do I recall Gerber voicing his frustrations to the media or the public. Emery needs to take a few deep breaths and think about what Gerber did, and is doing, and what he himself has done (backstopping a team with a whole hell of a lot of offence through 3 series victories - ask Alfredsson if 'Stanley Cup finalists' is an acceptable result) and is doing (save percentage starts with .8?? - unacceptable for a 1st string goalie).
If Emery was someone who had shown his worth throughout a long career, a public hissy fit might be overlooked, but at this stage in his career, he might yet be a flash in the pan.
I also wish people would give Gerber more respect - I for one remember him stonewalling Canada (and Rick Nash in particular) in Turin. Gerber's got his name on a Stanley Cup to boot, and maybe as a backup, but at least as a respectful, and hence respected, backup.
When we watch the eventual Sens-Wings Cup Final, I'd be more concerned about the aging Hasek-Osgood tandem than about Gerber...

I am not sure I can really blame Emery for what is going on. They removed the number one goalie position from him without really giving him a shot at it. He was injured at the start of the season and yes Gerber played well but you don't demote your goalie until he plays bad enough. This was not the case. The Sens were even wishy washy on who was their number one which in itself is not a good situation. These people need to grow up and have some appreciation and gratitude for the massive wealth they have as a result of playing a sport.

Emery needs to grow up and he will. He is a young man who became a successful starter in a relatively short period of time. Currently his frustration is showing his inexpereince. He has played injured in the past and feels that it is the injury and then the operation that has cost him his starters job. Well Ray, sometimes life just isn't fair.
PS: Who came up with the $7 million? He is being paid less than half of that annually!

Its always frustrating when you're coming back from an injury and readjusting to the highest level of hockey in the world.

However, a responsible adult and role model should keep his emotions in check, especially in public.

Finally, to all the knobs who are calling for a trade: like Emery, the new goalie could easily have a mishap, get injured. Emery got us to the Finals and he is still a great backup goalie --- with 6 mo to go in the season, we should not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

As a parent of 4 hockey players, including two goalies, I am disappointed in Emery's work ethic. If he were my child, I would tell him that his attitude and work ethic do not make him a team player and thus go out there and earn the spot. Players will work harder in front of a goalie they respect.

Anybody who does not show up to work (ie: practices) should get his pay docked accordingly. I say send him to the minors. His antics are not worthy of our attention.

Ray's shown he can be a good goalie, and I can understand he's in a frustrating situation. But that doesn't excuse his behavior. When someone underperforms, gets less time as a result, and then responds with childish temper tantrums, that says a lot about their character. Ray's actions have been absolutely classless, and have no place on any team. If he doesn't change his tune, the Senators ought to get rid of him. Whether he played well or not last season doesn't matter when he's underperforming now and demonstrating a terrible attitude on top of that.

not to underestimate Emery's ability to bring the team as far as he last year did but we all know the game of hockey is what u can bring to the table every game and to say at this point Emery should be playing regularly is not very practical. I don't mind his well appointed suits and colors he brings to the games but leave that bad attitude at home its toxic to ur teamates and a lot of the time will cause unnecesary tension with everyone around u including coching staff. I think Gurber is showing is true colors, just let him have fun.....

I think ray emery, is what hockey needs to get rid of. selfish young over paid athletes, with too much attuide. He's doing nothing good for the game, i havent even seen him play well enough to back up what he is crying about. We all know he doesnt deserve the #1 spot. I'm not a huge fan of alfie but I think he is an honest and respected captian, and if he's saying something listen up. Throwing a hissy fit in front of his team mates is weak and he should be embarssed, i hope he gets traded from ottawa becasue canada/nhl doesnt need players like him.

Ray Emery is an average NHL goalie at best. His attitude sucks, he lets in soft goals and he is being paid way too much money. Ray just wants to be a tough guy, Ottawa needs a goalie not a headache, get rid of him while you can, you made the mistake signing him to seven million don't make another mistake in keeping him.

I'm really not sure why Emery's latest escapades (tirades) are such a surprise to anyone and why so much news and air time have been generated. This is just another episode for a spoiled and angry young man, one who obviously thinks of himself as above everyone else. The Senators are a solid team and a Stanley Cup contender, they will handle this situation and sooner or later Emery will be traded. Unfortunately, Emery will see himself as a victim in all of this and some other team will suffer for it! So much wasted talent!

Firstly, would you want a goalie on your squad who originally has a Mike Tyson logo on his helmet? Ray Emery has had one decent year and doesn't compare to some of the elite goalies in this league like the Brodeur's, Luongo's or Kipper's. I say, buy him out and let him go to downtown Ottawa and play street hockey with the panhandlers. Emery should be gratefull he's in the league making the money he does. Look Ray, there are a lot of guys itching to fill your pink skates. Make everyone happy and go be Belfour's backup in Europe.

Emery's conduct has been questionable for a little while. First, there was the argument with an older gentleman on the road near the Scotia Bank Place. Later on, when he was back from his time off because of his hand, he showed up late or did not practice long with the team.
If you want your job back young man you have to prove that you deserve it. Alfie would not make such comments if they were not deserved. He is the captain of the team and has the right to tell the guys on his team what he thinks.
Gerber is a very good skilled goalie and has been working and playing real well. He deserves to play as no. 1 right now.
If Emery wants his job back, all he has to do is work for it and stop acting like a brat.

Emery played well last year in the playoffs, but what does he expect when he is coming back from an injury. Of course he is going to have to work his butt off to get back into the line-up, especially when Gerber has played so well. Unless Gerber starts choking, there's no reason for him to expect that he'll play more. He should just play hard and wait for his chance. Too bad that he has to be such a baby about it.

This recent behavior added to Emery's road rage altercation during the summer is painting a very unattractive picture of his personality.

I would give him until the All Star game to man up and then he'd be on waivers. A few weeks riding the buses in the minors should get the point across.

No team needs to employ a babysitter for this child.

Emery's contract needs to be tied to performance. With what's been said and implied, he needs to be traded. For Ottawa a win - lose situation (getting rid of a poor performer - high cost $$) for Emery a win - win situation ( I get the money - who's next as in this sport loyalty can be bought).

I coach several teams, and guys like that are guys you don't want on a team. They're cancers. Their egos are so inflated that it becomes all about them and not about the team. I'd say waive him. Get rid of the cancer before it becomes a full blown distraction. He's not a good teammate. You have guys like Biron when he was in Buffalo - never complained when Miller took his job. Biron still came to all the practices and worked really hard in case he was called to start a game. Emery's behavior is childish and unacceptable.

Emery really has only played one full season with the Sens as their #1 goaltender: 2006-07. A trip to the Stanley Cup made an average goaltender a very rich man. I hope the Sens trade him soon to free up cap space for acquisitions that will actually help them win the Cup this season.

From the outside it is very easy to make comments based on superficial information. Given that, the behavior of a few "elite athletes is abominable at best. These few act like 2 year olds who have lost their cowboy hats and for that they get a reward of $millions. Why not suspend them without pay and place them in a "naughty" seat, until they fade away. Do not under any circumstances pay any attention to them! This action should work for all spoiled brats in all sports.

Emery should be in net, simple as that! He proved himself last season. Sure he had a wobbly start, he missed training camp due to wrist surgery. I would be upset too! Sure Gerber had a good start, but mark my words - he will implode; only a matter of time!!

What we need from Emery is a little team spirit. He's out for himself right now, which isn't doing much for him, or for Gerber.

We need to be able to count on him to be solid, not a #2, but an alternate #1. To be there for the times when Gerber is down and out, or to be our top guy in the playoffs, where he thrives. That's the only way I can see this working.

What it comes down to is that both Emery and Gerber need to get a Yin and Yang thing going, instead of a Cain and Abel.

When the team captain throws you under the bus for your work habits, that's a problem. Especially when the captain is one of the hardest working, most dedicated players in the NHL. In the long run, Ray Emery may be the best goaltending option for Ottawa. In the short term, he's a lazy malcontent who needs to improve in almost every aspect of his game this year if he wants to insist that he deserves more playing time. Last year he played hurt, helped turn the Senators' season around and bring the team to the brink of being Cup champions. This year, his inconsistent play, bad attitude, and poor practice habits are undoing all the good will he generated, and it's time for Emery to show up, shut up, and grow up.

I agree with you comments. Gerber has shown to us and the team that he should be the starter and his play has been stellar. Emery should worry less about his expensive suits, vehicles and personal image and get back to showing us the fans that he can be the starter goalie that brought us to the Stanley Cup playoff last year. Hard work is always rewarded in life no matter what profession you are in. Thanks Go Sens Go

As a Sens fan, I cannot help but totally agree with you. When I head yesterday about Emery's hissy fit, I was disappointed - especially as a Sens fan.

I knew signing Emery to the contract the Sens did would be a mistake - although I thought it would be more in terms of his playing ability instead of Gerber's return to excellent play.

The thing is, Emery has always had a temper, one he has never hidden very well from his teammates or the press. And while it must suck to sit on the bench night after night, Gerber is playing better - a lot of the games started by Emery were lost. And hey, if you're making $7 million a year who cares what you're doing. I'd be glad to get paid $7 million for doing nothing.

Emery has always shown us he had a flair for the dramatic, with his flashy suits, cars and face masks. And we know that goalies in general are a quirky bunch at the best of times. But being flashy and odd will not earn you a starting spot as an NHL goalie. Neither will a trip to the Stanley Cup finals the previous year. Hockey is always about "what did you do for me lately?" and a goalie, more than any other player, can fall from grace even more quickly than he got to the top.
Emery needs to grow up. Show up on time and work hard and show everyone he is a team player. The timing may not be good for a trade, but I dont think Brian Murray will tolerate this behaviour very long. Emery could quickly find himself with lots of playing time, on a team in the bottom of the conference standings, or in the AHL. Ottawa fans already know all too well how quickly a "star" can crash and burn.

Emery deserves a fair shot at getting the starting job back. He earned the job last year without a doubt. Now he's sitting because of an injury and a hot backup? In Football and Basketball guys always get a fair shot when coming back from injury.

Now I understand the coaches wanting to improve his work ethic (and the whole teams with this example), but they have gone too far. He's a person with an ego just like everyone else. The players will see this as two things, a drive for hard work as well as a lack of support for a fellow player.
