A 16-year-old is facing an assault charge after an incident last month at a midget hockey game in Southampton, Ont.

Police allege a player struck another player in the neck with a stick during a Jan. 22 game between the Arran Elderslie Ice Dogs and the Saugeen Shores Storm at the Southampton arena.

A 15-year-old Storm player lost consciousness for about 10 seconds and suffered a severe concussion.

On Thursday, police formally charged the 16-year-old with assault with a weapon. He will appear in a Walkerton courtroom in March.

Southampton is about 230 kilometres northwest of Toronto, near Lake Huron.
