Ryan Smyth is back in Canada. Is Forsberg next?

Join us this afternoon on Hockey Night in Canada Radio (Sirius channel 122, 4 p.m. ET) for the most comprehensive two hours of hockey talk radio anywhere. Craig Simpson, former assistant coach of the Edmonton Oilers and now an analyst and commentator on Hockey Night in Canada, will be my co-host on the night Ryan Smyth makes his return to Edmonton in a Colorado uniform. We’ll be all over that story on today’s show.

We'll also be joined by the former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Pat Quinn to discuss the coaching opportunity that exists in Atlanta - the team he finished his playing career with.

Plus, we'll cover the Peter Forsberg rumours as he has now, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, narrowed his choice of teams down to two - the Senators and the Avalanche. Other teams are in the hunt, but these two seem to be the front-runners.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I think you can make a smaller list of the teams who aren’t interested in Forsberg's services. Further, I’m also now sure which story I can’t wait to go away - the "Forsberg returns to the NHL" story or the “Niedermayer and Selanne leave the NHL” story.

Other items we’re following for today’s show:

  • Tonight in Pittsburgh it’s Staal vs. Staal as Marc of the Rangers faces Jordan of the Penguins. This will be the first time the two have suited up against each other since their OHL days, when Marc played for the Sudbury Wolves and Jordan for the Peterborough Petes.
  • Speaking of the Staals, older brother Eric and the Carolina Hurricanes continued to tear through the league with last night's dismantling of the Vancouver Canucks and Roberto Luongo in a fight-filled contest. Last year, head coach Peter Laviolette tried to institute a “no fighting” rule for the 'Canes and they sputtered. Now that the rule has been laxed (three fights last night), the team has come together more. Say what you want about scraps (and they are not the sole reason behind Carolina’s resurgence), few things bond a team as well as sticking up for each other. Case in point: Tim Gleason taking on Brad Isbister after the big Canuck forward took liberties with goalie Cam Ward.
  • The AHL has upheld the NHL’s 25-game suspension of former Flyer Jesse Boulerice. We’ll talk about the relationship between the “A” and the NHL, and especially the “suspension relationship” the two organizations share.
  • In a basement battle Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Atlanta Thrashers, and I’m not exactly sure who would be more hard done by a loss. Toronto has squandered a favourable opening to the schedule that saw them play seven of their first nine games at home, picking up only three wins. Atlanta’s woes are well documented - problems at every position, instability behind the bench, ownership power struggles, Marian Hossa’s contract status, the injury to franchise goalie Kari Lehtonen, the lack of fan support at Philips Arena and the very real possibility that the Thrashers could end up losing a big piece of their revenue-sharing pie due to population growth in Atlanta. Oh, and they have the All-Star Game this year. Oops.

I walk to work down Oxford Street in London, England and over the summer listened to Leafs Lunch on podcast except when Jeff was at the cottage on holiday. I was disturbed to not hear Jeff's great knowledge with Bill, so now I have found him and have to read his blog. Your gain is 680's loss.
