Banner to unravel, players to debut
Wednesday, October 10, 2007 | 11:16 AM ET
Hope you can tune in to Hockey Night in Canada Radio this afternoon at 4p.m. ET (Sirius channel 122). I’ll be joined by Scott Oake for the entire two hours as we run down last night’s 7-1 drubbing of the Toronto Maple Leafs by the Carolina Hurricanes. Speaking of which, we’ll have 'Canes assistant general manager Ron Francis aboard this afternoon to talk up his squad.
We’ll preview a couple of the bigger games on the NHL schedule tonight that has the New York Islanders host the Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens are in Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins.
As always we’re interested in your feedback on the show. What you like, guests you’d like to hear, etc. Email us at hnicradio@cbc.ca with all your thoughts and ideas.
Around the League
- The Anaheim Ducks will raise their Stanley Cup banner tonight at the Honda Centre (the players all got their rings in a private ceremony at the home of owner Hanry Samueli a couple of days ago). Ducks GM Brian Burke assured us on HNIC Radio last week that tonight’s ceremony will be brief. Also, the Ducks are expecting both netminder J.S. Giguere and Samuel Pahlsson to return to the lineup tonight. Both are coming off hernia surgeries. Todd Bertuzzi, however, is questionable after tweaking his groin against Columbus Friday.
- Jonathan Toews is expected to make his NHL debut tonight as the Chicago Blackhawks host the San Jose Sharks. Look for Toews to play on a line with Tuomo Ruutu and Pat Kane.
- Marian Hossa is not expected to play tonight against his old team the Ottawa Senators. Hossa injured his groin in practice Monday. Hossa is poised to become an unrestricted free agent next summer and is eyeballing the Dany Heatley contract as a comparable. Contract extension talks between Hossa’s camp and the Thrashers have been described as slow.
- Even after trading netminder Manny Fernandez the Minnesota Wild are back to platooning goaltenders. Where it was once expected that Niklas Backstrom would be the number one in Minny, the outstanding play of Josh Harding through pre-season has forced coach Jacques Lemaire to once again platoon his goalies.

Great work so far Jeff. Some focus on players is good - it's hard to get a good interview out of a lot of them, but maybe you can crack that atom.

Hey guys,
I like hearing one on one interviews with any NHL player, coaches. Or a good debate about a bad Ref call, lord knows I see plenty of them!(my opinion)
I know lastnight was a big loss for the Leafs. But do you mind if I comment about about this? I'm reading online and I see some fans in my opinion are being so hard on the Leafs. Can't we give them a chance to workout some kinks. I mean really guys it's a little early in the season, let's not throw them under bus so quickly.
I read some say "they stink, I can see what kind of year we're going to have" Or better yet, this one, "kiss the cup good-bye"
Is it me? or does anyone else feel that those sort of comments are a bit harsh so early on.
Teams across the board have new coaching staff, players, lines, not to mention rules. How many times do we hear a whistle blow and the player being called on it is looking like.."you're kidding me right?" because he has no clue why the call was made, but ends up in the box (not always, some of the time)
And playing with new lines, is an adjustment.
I think most of us can agree that things for the Leafs as well as other teams are a work in progress, let's see what happens as the season unfolds. I see the potential for the team is there. Everyone has off days.
Have a great day
