The Tampa Bay Lightning received some bad news Sunday after defenceman Dan Boyle underwent wrist injury and was told he'll miss four to six weeks on the ice.

The freak injury occurred in the dressing room following a 2-1 exhibition defeat to the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Boyle severed three tendons when his skates slipped offa hook and landed on his left wrist.

The Lightning said Boyles' successful surgery was performed by team physician Dr. Ira Guttentag and hand specialist Dr. Richard Gray at University Community Hospital in Tampa, Fla.

The 31-year-old Ottawa native was one of the most productive defenceman last season, scoring 20 goals, 43 assists and 63 points in 82 games.
