Ilya Kovalchuk stole the show at the inaugural NHL YoungStars game.

The Atlanta Thrasher's rookie phenom potted a half-dozen goals to pace Team Melrose to a 13-7 victory over Team Fox in the four-on-four exhibition between the league's up-and-coming stars.

Kovalchuk scored four times at even strength, once short-handed, once on a penalty shot.

His sixth goal came against an empty net.

"I took the game very serious," Kovalchuk said. "I just wanted to show what I could do."

Dan Blackburn and Roberto Luongo had the unenviable task of playing net in a game with little defence and no hitting. The two goalies combined to face 73 shots.

"I'm glad it's over -- very glad," said Blackburn who made 16 saves. "I just have bruised confidence and a bruised ego."

Edmonton Oiler forward Mike Comrie tallied three goals and added an assist to lead Team Fox in scoring.

Players were randomly sorted onto two teams, coached by former Kings player and broadcaster Jim Fox and former Kings coach Berry Melrose.

The game replaced the annual Heroes of Hockey old-timers game. BOXSCORE
