Vancouver's 'Sleep Doctor' methods
May 7, 2009 03:04 PM | Posted by CBC Sports StaffOnce again the Canucks did not skate on game day. The team made a few players available in the lobby of their hotel at noon, while Roberto Luongo was the only one that took advantage of their ice time at the United Centre.
The Canucks have employed a ‘Sleep Doctor’ all season long.
Based on a survey done early in the season in which the players all wore sleep monitoring bracelets, the doctor has made recommendations on everything from when the team should fly, practice and when they should have days off.
The team is 3-0 in playoff road games, so there’s no reason to change their patterns now.
The anthem
The Chicago Blackhawks faithful are known for their incredible energy during the American National Anthem. The decibel level is off the charts with the fans clapping and screaming.
A curious Vancouver-based reporter asked a Chicago writer why they cheer and clap instead of singing along. It was explained that the tradition reaches all the way back to the Old Chicago Stadium where the acoustics were not as good as the United Center and even when fans were singing, it just echoed back as noise. A tradition was born.
It is a sight to see and hear. IIt is an incredible opening to a sporting event.
Ailing Ohlund
Canuck defenseman Mattias Ohlund was part of the group that spoke to the media this afternoon at the hotel. He is very obviously sick. He also suffered through the flu in first round.
No Salo
Sami Salo did not skate this morning and he will not play in Game 4. Salo is suffering from a lower body injury and had an MRI earlier this week. Based on the results, the team decided to bring him east. But based on the way head coach Alain Vigneault described him, Salo is not close to playing.
Salo took a comedic approach yesterday to the incessant questions about his what part of his body ailed him, saying “Maybe it’s an ankle… or maybe it just burns when you pee, who knows?”
