Sean Avery has no honour

Play Video: Sean Avery has no honour

Grapes admits that Sean Avery has guts, he's fearless, he's a good shooter and that he's a good hockey player. But the Coach also thinks the Rangers forward has no honour and he doesn't command respect

Sean Avery is an embarrassment to hockey simply because he is a narcissistic sociopath and doesn't care about anyone but himself. Integrity goes a very long way in life....but then again I guess we can't blame him entirely for his words or actions.....we can blame his parents too !!!! Don Cherry...we love you AND you are never wrong in our eyes !!!!!!!

I totally agree with Don Cherry. I don't think anybody could have said it any better. His unacceptable attitude and behavior simply sabotages the good hockey player which he really is. And for all you people out there who say that anyone would love Avery if he was on their team, that's not true. I'm a maple leafs fan, and the day they sign Sean Avery, I'll stop cheering for them. I don't care if he gets 50 goals in one season. Success means nothing to me if you don't have any honor.

Nobody is saying he doesn't have some skill. He is just a idiot. Pretty childish tactics from a so called "professional." I am also sure the comments from Avery's father are bull as well. Of course you are going to defend your own son. Too bad his son is a loser and a joke to hockey. I honestly wouldn't want him on my team. Look at Bertuzzi, he is an excellent player but after his goon tactics, i wouldn't want him on my team. Avery is a good player but an embarrassment to hockey.

Hmmm what has Avery done for hockey and what has Brodeur done for hockey? At least Brodeur has proven himself whereas Avery has proven to be a buffoon and should be ashamed he is a pro athlete.

Every team needs an agitator. If you recall the Devils had Claude Lemieux , who was worse than Avery . Brodeur is a great goalie and an even greater crybaby . If a Canadian team had Avery , they would be singing his praises . So Don Cherry , lets get off the high horse and stop being a hypocrite . If you had him on the Bruins , you would love him. Avery has speed , can pass and score. When he's in the lineup , the Rangers win more often than not. The numbers don't lie !

Sean Avery keeps looking like a fool by his own accord, It's a shame he does have some hockey skills. I wonder why he keeps one eye on the "Canadian Press" making comments he cares less about what is said about him up there. Without the hockey press in the north he would be a nobody.
Don I know you are a great patriot of Canada. How do you feel about Dominik Hasek's choice not to remove his headgear for pregame anthams, more so how the NHL seems to over look it?

It hilarious to here Don Cherry and about 1/4 of the country be total hipocrits about the play of Sean Avery.. more then half of this country (including myself) thinks teams with alot of europeans WILL NOT win you stanley cups. We all go on about having more North American players on our teams to give us grit and toughness along with skill, and to do what it takes to win the cup... Sean Avery has it all of these traits!! so to all you anti-avery people out there.. stop your complaining, he's doing what most other players in the NHL are scared of doing to bring the Cup to his team

Sean Avery is a gritty goal scorer who shows passion and desire to play the game. Although his antics last week against NJ were questionable, there is no doubt he would be an asset to any team. Sean Avery does it all. He is a goal scoring pest. Who wouldn't want him?

Sean Avery is an great hockey player. He dosent need to be a pest but its what he does and he is good at it. He can score, he can handle the puck, he can set guys up, he can do it all. He is a thee "Super Pest".

In discussion on respect and honor in the NHL, what ever happened to players having to shake hands after every game? It's only after a best of 7... We make the young kids in the minors do it after all the games, why can't the NHL players do it too? This is the beginning of showing each other respect, the young hockey players look up to the NHL players and see the disrespect and the inability to control anger in games and then no one thanks to each other for a great game. The young players coming into the NHL seem to be getting worse as the years go by. Its a game, have we forgot about what hockey is about? If you NHLers don't remember its for FUN and ENJOYMENT! (and not the money either)

Let's face the reality of our games of all sports. There is no honour in sports today or in the past. Players will do anything and call it strategy, gamesmanship. In a world where winning is everything, hockey is one of most dirtiest sports in the world.
What Avery did is nothing compare to what Bobby Clark did to Kharlamov in 1972.
Clark intentionally broke the ankle of the best player in the series, because we did not want to loss to the Russsians honourablely or not.

Posted April 20, 2008 03:45 PM

Justin Thomson

Maybe the things that Sean Avery does could be considered honorless, but I guarantee you that every one of these people who say that they hate him would ABSOLUTELY love him if he played for their team because he does whatever it takes to win. I honestly believe that he was the reason the devils went down in Five games. If Avery doesnt do what he did with Martin Brodeur there is NO WAY Martin doesn't squeeze one or two more wins out of that series at least. He did what he needed to do to get Brodeur off his game and now Brodeur is golfing and Avery plays on.

Don is righ on here! I like how he he mentioned all of Avery's good points, but the antics he brings is not something kids should aspire to. I do agree he is a good player for entertainment value, but I would not want my child trying to do a chicken dance infront of the net like that.

Thanks Don for making a point of telling the kids to play hard...and doing chicken dances infront of a goalie is not the way to play the game!

I love Don Cherry and everything he represents. Living in the States, I watch the replay of Coaches Corner every Sunday morning with my 8 year old boy. We are mad for hockey and Don Cherry embodies the spirit of this great sport. Don speaks of honor and class and respect for your opponent and I try to remember that when I play and teach that to the mites team that I coach. Way to go Don and way to go CBC for giving him a platform. Go Habs in Game 7!

I don't always agree with Don Cherry, but in this case I do 100%. I have been a N.Y. Rangers fan since 1961 and have taken abuse over the years for it. I think Avery is a solid hockey player and yes I have him in the hockey pools, but Avery erred by not shaking Martin Brodeur's hand. Actually the no class Avery should have asked Brodeur for his autograph. In future years when he matures, he will regret this incident.

Well I wanted to say first to Don Cherry. I have enjoyed your comments every weekend and playoffs. Because I have the center ice package.

Ok Sean Avery All I can say is. As much as he has 3 goals in the playoffs so far. I don't like the stuff he can do. Yes I know he has improved in behavior just a little not much thoe. Cause when he played for LA he was doing stuff that was worse. But as a Rangers fan. I didn't like him doing the stuff on the goalie. Then calling him a name afterwords on a post game show. I thought he should have been fined. But now I am waiting for when. Someone slaps him silly. But will see what round 2 does for him. But I don't like Avery very much it's like when I didn't like Carl Evrett playing for the Boston Red Sox.

In all fairness to the game,
On the surface getting rid of Shaun Avery would appear to be an ideal solution, haven't
said this however, this is our game and that is not how we do things. We deal with guys like Avery in our own special way! the "CANADIAN WAY" he did not disgrace the NHL. Avery sacraficed his own integrity and morales. He knows what he must do and so do the great players of the "GREATEST GAME" in the world. Anyone who calls Avery 'bad for the game' or 'disrespectful' is a hyocrite. Here's a guy that gives his all to WIN and he gets lambasted. If a Bruin was doing this Don Chery would have a man-crush on the guy for 'giving it his all' and 'doing whatever it takes to win.'

It's just a GAME so big deal if Avery is an annoying twit. His team beat the Sucky Baby Brodeur's team, in part because they were thrown off by his antics. That is called 'strategy'.

and Avery's "unsportsmanlike" antics in front of Brodeur's face.... NO RULES were broken so they invented one to keep Brodeur happy. When did cry baby goalies who lose their cool become the purveyors of sportsmanship?

Besides.... has anyone seen the ratings for the NHL lately? the NHL needs 31 more Avery's. I love watching his antics as much as I love seeing Ovechkin smile after scoring, or seeing Brian Burke almost cry when talking about Kevin Lowe. love it love it love it.

I have never been a Rangers fan. Never. But Lundquist, Shanny, Avery, the young D-men, even Jagr have my 100% support this year.

Im not standing behind what he did. It was stupid and bad for the game. But, you cant deny the fact that every sport needs a villian, a rival, someone to loathe. Sean Avery - is that guy.
He is a good example of why people love sports - half the fun and enjoyability of enjoying sport is to root for the good guys, boo the bad guys. Does Avery deserve a stick to the side of the head? Yeah, probably. Is he causing more people to tune in? Absolutely. Do any other hockey players cause this much publicity right now? No one.

When you have people in bars all across north america discussing one guys stupid antics in a hockey game, id say the sport is doing well. Bad publicity is good publicity all the same. Besides, anyone who date(d) one of the Duff girls cant be all bad. ;)

Classless, no, Broduer"the baby" was classles and without honor, Avery extended his hand and was ignored. That is classless and without honor. If Avery were on a beloved Canadian team, he would be fawned over, because even though he can be a pest and an agitator, he contributes. Let's hear more on the classlessness, Broduer style.

I don't get some of the other commentators on cbc.ca like Jeff Marek saying that we need people like Avery. Some people are fans of the 3 ring circus that Avery brings to the sport, but there are some people who actually like hockey... wait let me say that again, people who actually like hockey!! Wow, crazy eh?

How are Avery's antics good for anything other than ratings (ratings needed in the US not in Canada)? He forgets and throws away things such as honor, respect, and fairplay.

Meanwhile we degrade and attempt to "fix" our national sport so that it appeals more to Americans who will never care about hockey (I mean Floridians and Californians who grew up with baseball and football and have never even seen snow)

Hockey is, and never was broken. The Avery's of the league do not make it a better game. They only serve the leagues attempts to sell, as the old saying goes "Refrigerators to Eskimoes"

I love the game of hockey. Grew up on it and love Avery's grass roots style. I am a loyal Wings fan, and enjoy the class of the Detroit organization but still believe that there is a valuable place in all levels of hockey for Avery's style of game. He threw Brodeur off his game and thats his role. It was Brodeur's arrogance that should be focused in on, and possibly a fine for his very open display of poor sportsmanship in his lack of handshaking. Poor baby, what's the pampered millionaire gonna teach our kids.

Martin Brodeur, is a great goalie and if Sean Avery doesn't want to show the respect for him that most others do he is the one without class. Oh I forgot he's been told that before, well, they are right. If Brodeur didn't want to shake his hand, fine, Sean Avery knows better than anyone else exactly why, but to call him a name is beneath contempt. Grow up Sean Avery and learn when to shut your mouth.
