Marty Turco is the smartest goalie in the NHL

Play Video: Marty Turco is the smartest goalie in the NHL

If Dallas goes on to win the Stanley Cup, it’ll be because of the play of Marty Turco, who Grapes calls the smartest goaltender in the NHL.

Turco may be smart, but he is not carrying, nor will he carry, the Stars. Actually, if they come up against Detroit, Turco will be thier Achilles heel. He is what, 1 for 12 against the Wings all time? I guess the good news is the one win did come this year, so he is improving, but still, I don't like the trend.

But Don was right, he does handle the puck very well...

Whatever happened to the NEW NHL where skill and speed would now dictate the game and the slightest blade on the hands or grabbing another player would get you 2 minutes in the box? The new rules were enforced during the season and as a result, the best of the best were able to show off their stuff.

Should the playoffs not follow the same rules? Now intimidation and bullying are the name of the game. Why is the game not refereed the same way and please don't use the excuse that it's the playoffs and the players are taking it to the next level?

The next level of what? - grabbing, clutching, inteference, slashing, cross-checking, goaly intimidation, etc. We're back where we were before the NEW NHL and it's a shame. Winning is not going to be dictated by the skill of the players but by who can physically beat the other team into the ground.

The refs have the power. Why arn't they using it?

I have been watching the CBC coverage of the Philly/Habs series and it would appear that there exists within your broadcast, a somewhat hesitant support for the Montreal organization (the only Canadian team remaining). I fully realize that your english broadcasting of Montreal games throughout the regular season has been weak, if nonexistant, and that your play-by-play commentators are strictly accustomed to working the leafs broadcast; however, I must stress that, like the Leafs organization, the Montreal organization is a Canadian institution as well and therefore, warrants some effort in support. If you cannot broadcast this series with more responsibility, or at the very least, be more neutral, than take on some other series. I am completely English; however I must say that at times, the RDS broadcast is better tolerated.

Don Cherry says Marty Turco is the smartest.

Everything is relative.

I would tend to agree with Vancouver Jason on the idea that Turco is not carrying the Stars by himself right now. The Stars are finally getting good offense (or "offence") going which is something they have not had in quite a while. There's no doubt that Turco has to keep up the solid play. Every playoff goalie does. But for now the Stars seem to be clicking on all cylinders at the right times (especially with their come-back rallies).

p.s. Can we trade our John Madden for your Don Cherry?

This is not a profound statement: Having Turco is like having a 3rd Defenseman. He totally screws up the fore-checking scheme and takes away traditional dump-ins or ring-the-board entries. I don't really know why this isn't considered when ya'll are trying to decide who is the best keeper going right now. As for the Stars chances, don't overlook the three balanced lines that are emerging.
Ribero, Modano and Richards make this team as good down the middle as anyone. I say "emerging" given that the real fun will begin when Zubov starts logging 30 minutes vs his 16 minutes his first night back.

I was very upset with the reaction of the Philly fans tonight during the Canadian national anthem. The fan base in Philly should wake up, just because you may dislike the other team, which is expected its the flippin playoffs, or a particular player on that team, that is no reason to disrespect the Nation anthem of your closest neighbour. Wake up!!!! GO HABS GO

Can you let Don Cherry know that, surprise-surprise, he is wrong about "Jersey". The word comes from the British island and dates back to 1583, somewhat before the town of Jersey started making cloth. The word simply means "knitted cloth".

Dallas is playing good from the net out. I think it would be cool that Mike Modano wins another cup before he retires, but all of this is irrelevant because Pittsburgh is going to take it all!

The fact is, Calgary wore down the Sharks for the Stars. They're easy pickings now. Even the Make Beliefs could beat 'em.

"i agree that the only way dallas can win the cup is if turco carries them" (m.mcgrath)

Not sure who you're agreeing with, but that is not at all what Don Cherry said, nor is it true. The Stars are handling themselves very well in the playoffs so far. You might not have noticed that Dallas scored 4 times (plus an empty netter) against San Jose last night. Did Turco do that?

Don't kid yourself. It takes a team effort to win. You need offense to score goals, defense to take away scoring chances, and a goaltender to keep the puck out of the net. No one player can do it all. If Dallas was winning every game 1-0, you might be able to say Turco is "carrying" them, but that is clearly not the case.

In any case, Marty Turco certainly is a great goaltender, no matter how you slice it.

About the habs and the philly series, I think that the flyers are just getting lucky with there goals. You haved to admit that the habs have out played them totally. but just didn't get the results.Anyways i guess thats hockey. GO HABS GO

I don't know if Turco is the smartest goalie or not but, for the last bunch of years he's been called a choker, not able to win the big game. He looks like he's ready to shed that title. With Dallas just about ready to take a 2-0 series lead over the Sharks back to Dallas, Turco is one of the keys. He's playing fantastic and it looks like it could be a Wings/Stars WCF and that would be good one.

Yeah, while Marty Turco may be a great goalie and an excellent stick-handler, it doesn't make him perfect. I truly think Kelly Hrudey needs to look past his love for Turco while commentating the Sharks/Stars game.
His interference call was a clear-cut call & I'm glad the ref picked it up. Turco didn't touch th e puck ... it's interference.
Calm down Hrudey!

There is no doubt Marty Turco adds another concern to opposing teams. In watching Marty play you have to smile at how he creates opportunities and sometimes he gets in trouble but has to bail himself out. I think Dallas will be a good contender against the Habs in the Cup battle. I know alot will disagree but you have to know that they can bounce back and Pits will be a tough 7 game battle but the Habs will succeed.
