The Leafs have not quit on Paul Maurice yet

Play Video: The Leafs have not quit on Paul Maurice yet

Grapes doesn't think the Maple Leafs have quit on head coach Paul Maurice just yet and salutes the resurgent play of the Calgary Flames' Owen Nolan. Don also looks back at some of his favourite calls from CBC Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Don Whittman.

Dear Don
I have bled blue@white my whole life.
I will be absolutely crushed if they let Sundin go. Most hockey players from other countries cant and dont really know what hockey means to us canadians, they may think they do. Sundin has bled blue@white for most of his career. He has shown that year in year out, played with anyone and has made them all better hockey players. He will end his career the way he started and with any luck he will hoist the cup. I wish the Leafs would give Mats another elite player or two. Give him what he deserves. He is one of the most loyal captains around, you see it whenever they play the canadian national anthem. He is the one singing it.I am so proud to have him lead the leafs.
Whatever he decides to do with his future,I will be rooting for him all the way just as I did during the Olympics.
For a Swede he is as close to a Canadian as your gonna get.

GOD LOVE MATS

To the honorable Don Cherry I am sending you a heart felt S.O.S. Please forward this message to Cliff Fletcher. My brothers (Jeff & Wes)and I are true hockey fans. We are all in our Thirties now, but still get together every Saturday for Hockey Night in Canada. Have since I can remember. Love the game. Love the Leafs. We think of the players as "OUR BOYS". When our guys get hurt we feel it. All to often people forget that these guys are human. An injury is not just a few days or a few weeks. It's the rest of his life... that knee or that shoulder is going to ache. When players stop protecting each other because the league penalizes them for standing up for one another. When guys like Ponikarovsky & Antropov are cross checked from behind and there is no one on the team to have a brothers back. NO ONE STANDING UP FOR EACH OTHER. That's when the game is hard to watch. Win or Lose we don't care as long as "OUR BOYS" are fighting for one another. We can put our Blue and White on and feel proud. My brothers and I have to fight with every flavour of Hockey fan out here to get the game on at the Pub. Cliff we need you to put some HEART back on the ice. Instigator penalty who cares. That's the best penalty we'll get all game. It's better than watching "OUR BOYS" be helped off the ice every night. Crosby's got Laraque.. Ovechkin’s got Brashear. Alfredsson’s got Mcgratton & Neil. I ask you, who does SUNDIN have?!
Yours Truly,
Shanne C. Bushey

Don
Don't you think that the Leafs can play two periords, but not three. Is it conditioning or the fact that they just don't care?

Well Don, I'm not sure whether or not the players have quit on Paul Maurice but they sure don't seem to interested in winning either. Scottie Bowman has basically hung Richard Peddie and MLSE out to dry and I can't blame him..Think about it..

Richard Peddie with all the smarts of a sandbag chose JFJ with no track history over a Legend with 9 Stanley Cups to his credit to run the team and now he goes..duh..maybe hiring JFJ was a mistake...Hello..you think?..and all because Scottie wanted full control of the team..

Ricard Peddie..you are an idiot

Hello Don,
I have never been a bandwagonner and never will be. My heart and blood bleed blue and white and i would leave my wife of 13 yrs in a heart beat to have a significant employment position with the Leafs. However, it is escruitiatingly painful for me to hear you say that Larry and Richard would be somewhat afraid to release the reins to Bowman because they "think" they know something about running a hockey team. How disheartening to have the greatest, winningest hockey mind take the bait to turnaround the most prolific franchise in all of sports only to have your own personal insecurities thwart the satisfaction of millions of fans across the globe. Would love to have a pop with you, very sincerely,
Jay Mancuso

I don,t think the fans should give up on Paul Maurice or John Ferguson yet.Yes i agree it has been a tough season so far.But if blame is to be cast it should be cast at the players as well as the coach and general manager.I have been a Maple Leafs fan my whole life but i have to admit this is the worst season i have seen yet.Although discussed with there performance i am not ready to throw in the towel.I think what has to happen is the players have to come to terms with there selves and start playing every game to the very best of there ability. They have shown time and again they have the ability and the heart to do so.They play really good for awhile then it is like they don,t care and lose heart. They are a good team and are certainly capable of doing a lot better. They just have to find there sweet spot and play like Hell.Although it has been a rough season so far let,s not give up.

Best two teams in the NHL playing, and Coaches
Corner has to start off with chat about Leaves.
At least Owen Nolan had some mention and a piece
on Don Whittman. When Toronto is playing so
bad and losing, focus should be on other good
stories in the NHL. When Leaves have a better
team and record, CBC can give them more time.
It was a pleasure to see Ottawa game for once
on HNIC game 1.

Dear Don
You are definateley a champion of our armed forces and should be commended for your continual support. Too bad we don't hear more from our politicians and Government.
I agree that the Leaf players have not given up on the coach. No player goes out on the ice to lose.Bad trades and picking up every other teams rejects, along with no trade clause for McCabe outlines the leadership incompentency of the Leafs upper mangement. Maurice, who is a good coach inherited this team and I think will be sorry to see Sundin traded off to try and save upper management credability. They have failed miserably and need to clean house from the top down.

Don I like to know what you would with some of the under acheivers on this team ? Would you have sat John Pohl out as long as he has ? not that he is going to score a bunch of goals but maybe he comes to play each night, I like to know what moves you would make to get this team back into the race most of Don would you like to be in the position not coach but GM? I know from a player or 2 that you coached you take no bull from some and also found ways of getting players up for games who helped crabbed some of those guys by the throat? Don would yo be interested in the GM job . What would you say to any of the players that did quit on Maurice how would you think of them if they did. Nice to see Owen Nolan playing well again , and Don Whittman one of the best play by play people of all time

Posted January 13, 2008 01:49 AM

Wes

I don't think they have quit on the coach yet or will the rest of the season. They do need to quit on Fergusen though. Signing guys to no-trade clauses is always a no no. Also to sign McCabe to the amount a true #1 defense gets is wrong when he is a 3rd rate one without the mental capability to ever be a #1. Lets get Boman now.

Dear Don, I really enjoyed the Corner this week, especially the player profiles you provide, noteably on Vincent Lecavalier. It also cannot be said enough of all the good work you do for the Canadian Armed Forces. This leads me to ask if HNIC can establish a foundation to provide funding for charitable organizatuions linked to the Forces. In this manner fans can contribute to an umbrella funding organization which can reach every aspect of Forces' support possible. If anyone can make it happen, Don, it is you! A big thumb's up, David Berridge
