Devils look like they needed one extra day of rest

Play Video: Devils look like they needed one extra day of rest

Don thinks that the New Jersey Devils would have benefited from one more day of rest after falling behind 4-1 to the Ottawa Senators in the first period of game one. Grapes also shows how Bobby Orr may never be rivaled but Scott Niedermayer of the Anaheim Ducks uses his speed in a similar way.

Thank you Grapes for once again showing why Bobby is, was, and always will be the greatest hockey player who ever lived or ever will live.
Need proof, just watch these clips of him again. Enough said.

Ron and Don - I support our troops fully, but could you please keep the cheering for our soldiers on the show to a minimum and focus on the hockey. CBC has its regular news broadcasts, including The National, to update us on the latest around Afghanistan and Iraq, including casualties. This really isn't HNIC's or your mandate.

To Coach's Corner,
I am a teenage avid hockey fan and viewer of HNIC. I would appreciate if this comment can be brought to the attention of Don Cherry.
On April 28th Don mentioned about the defenseman's sticks blocking the goalie's view path. I have some input regarding that topic that he could use as a tip for youngsters. If the defensemen used white tape it would minimize this problem substantially. I am aware the problem would still occur, but the screen would be less considering the non-camouflage from the stick. By the same token, forwards should use black. Just a simple thing I noticed that would be something that I think Don could use to validate his point. If he would like to give reference to me, I'd be honoured.
Thanks,
Jesse

I am an American, and proud to be.I am close to Canadian. I get CBC,as I live just a few miles from Cornwall.Hockey has been there for me since the 50's. It is sad the main US networks are not broadcasting hockey.....you have to pay extra.
I am glad I can still count on my neighbor Canadians to broadcast hockey "free". Thank you Canada; and thank you for your two great sportcasters Brian and Don; the brains and heart of hockey!!I turn sixty five this may, and have enjoyed 50 years of hockey night in Canada ( or close to it). Thanks Again Merci

Hello Ron & Don. Just a little blurb regarding the Sudbury Wolves who won the OHL Eastern Conference Championship for the 1st time in over 30 years last night in triple overtime. I believe this is the Bobby Orr cup. Not bad for a team that finish 5th in the east. With Foligno as coach & his son & the 2 Staal brothers & the whole team playing awsome, they could go all the way. The Sudbury Arena was sold out with over 5000 fans, so my son & I watched the game at a local pub/restaurant. Go Wolves Go. Ron & Don, keep up the good work, we love coach's corner.

Ron, You were commenting tonight on Scott Niedermayer's amazing skating ability. I wonder if you know that Scott and Rob's mom, Carol, taught hundreds of Cranbrook kids, including my own two sons, to power skate, back in the 80's and 90's in the old Kinsmen and Memorial arenas in Cranbrook. Rumour has always had it that Carol taught power skating for the Cranbrook parks & rec commission free, in return for extra ice time for Scott and Rob to practice. The Niedermayers were a family that were all about community and not about "them", which makes it all the better to see these two nice guys achieve the success their family worked so hard for.

Gentlemen,

Don't you wish the crowds could be a bit more louder? The arenas are bigger, but the fans seem to be wimpy'er! The old Chicago Stadium and the Winnipeg Arena were the loud buildings who at times were like an extra man on the ice (just because they would cheer so loud).

I would like to know why the referees don't have to answer the decisions made during a game. Why when players are asked during a break referees are not. They are getting paid good money to decide a game maybe a future but they never have to comment. Hmmm it is almost like watching WWE. FAKE... of course even the refs can't score the goals for a team, but it sure does'nt hurt to have upstairs deciding what is and what isn't a penalty.. ( I say upstairs because the refs seem to take their time on some calls, hence the reason the opposition has the puck when the call is made.

I truly believe that the whole theatrics of wheeling guys out on stretchers because of a huge hit plays into the U.S. of A's ideology of turning everything into a made for Hollywood movie dramatism. You don't ever see the media's ridiculous spectacle of when a football player gets unloaded on because hockey is not America's "past-time" sport. It is not accepted as the cultural norm south of the 49th parallel because they did not invent the game and cannot proudly call it their own. They constantly overplay things like Curt Schilling's bloody ankle to show true American adversity. The replay of the hit on Bobby Orr along the boards shows true athleticism, He wasnt wearing a helmet and took a harder blow then most guys do today. My hat is off to you Ron and Don for making a case that hard hits are part of the game and no matter what you do, it is not going to prevent impact to the noggin in such a high paced style of play.

I believe that in the playoffs every team needs to have an answer on how they are going to control their oppenent, exploit weakness, and create advantages in their series. In the first round it was apparent the Penguins were coming into the series with an abundance of tallent and grit, but without a real plan on how to shut down the Senators and capitalize on their unique makeup. I believe this series is another example of just how the Trade Deadline really doesn't have that much effect on a teams playoff run. Other examples would be the Islanders and a certain overpriced forward on the Detroit Red Wings. The Coaches ability to take his team after the trade deadline and turn it into a playoff machine was the difference in the Pens\Sens series. Now in round two, the Senators are facing a team that is deffinately less explosive, but has the framework of a true playoff team. This is definately going to be a true test for the Senators and if they can overcome this hurdle, the path to the finals will set in my opinion. Some may believe that the Sabres will be the ultimate test, or that The Senators aren't a true contender, but We'll see in a months time who's heading to the finals with a team that has every forward line firing and each defensive pairing working hard preforming their assigned task perfectly.

Greetings

I wonder if you can help my understand the additional time New Jersey was allotted. If I heard the HNIC pre-game commentators correctly, they stated that the series was supposed to start on Tuesday, but, that Lou Lamerelo refused to play stating something like his team needed the extra time. Well, I am holding back my resentment, because, this story hasn’t been confirmed, but, I wonder why Vancouver wasn’t afforded the same courtesy. It seem that the Canucks were in the same situation and instead of getting additional time, they were penalized by having to play with very little time off. If this is indeed the case, then can anybody help me understand the disparity and favoritism.

On the other hand, Don, I really can’t think of any hockey personality I respect more than you, but, when you’re wrong, you’re wrong. What I have in mind is you comment about not talking about our mission anymore and supporting our troups. Essentially, you are arguing apples and oranges. Discussing the mission is not at all akin to not supporting our troupes. In fact, I can see how a discussion can galvanize our support. For example, I support our troups unequivocally, but at the same time, I would certainly appreciate clarity on our mission. So, keep supporting our troupes, I appreciate your efforts and I am sure that our troups appreciate it as well. Stick to hockey though and please quit arguing apples and oranges.

During the Devils/Sens game last night the announcer said that the Sens had scored four unanswered goals. This was said with about 4 minutes left in the period.
The Devils then scored with about 2:30 left in the first. Therefore, they "Answered." The term he should have used was four straight goals. Unanswered should only be used at the end of a period or game, not during.

CBC's coverage during the Ottawa series against Pittsburgh and now the Devils has been interesting. You'd never know this is a Canadian broadcaster. They certainly won't be accussed of favouritism towards the Canadian team. In fact, blink during Coach's Corner and you'd hardly notice Ottawa is even playing - so little time is devoted to them. But of course, it isn't their darling Leafs playing. What narcissism. Ottawa's success must really be sticking in the CBC's throats. One can only hope for a Vancouver-Ottawa all-Canadian final that forces the CBC to acknowledge that the world does not, in fact, revolve around Toronto. I love it. Go Sens Go!

NHL record or not….????

San Jose shutout Detroit in game 1 of their second round series 2-0.

The apparent NHL record is that it’s most likely that it’s the first time in NHL history that two Newfoundlander NHL hockey players played on opposing teams in round two (and maybe even round one in any series) with one of them scoring an assist – Ryan Clowe of San Jose assisted on Joe Thornton’s goal. Daniel Cleary did not score for Detroit. NHL trivia record.

Love your show,it's the best. I want to know why none of the NHL teams are loyal to the players? You have teams like the rangers who go and rent a player and then this year where most teams did the same.(eg. detriot,anhiem,san-jose,) What ever happened to keeping a team together long enough to gel together?(eg.new jersey, ottawa, bufflo, calgary) A team like new jersey has been in the playoffs as long as I can remember and allways seems to go far every year. Maybe if the players knew that they were not going to be traded every second year the salaries would not be so high. This in turn may help the fans, whom seem to be forgotten by managment, stay more loyal to there favorite teams and spend money to see them play. I for one am tired of paying the outragious price for my family of 3 to go to a game. For the price of one game I could take my family out for a week of camping,2 different concerts,or about 10 movies. The NHL needs to start looking at what's important'the players and us the fans. It would be nice for the average person to be able to afford to see a game without spending a weeks salary.

You are probably right. Ottawa had the extra rest plus New Jersey played an extra game against a slightly tougher opponent in my estimation. Bobby Orr was the greatest in his era, maybe ever. I don't like to tag any one as the greatest as equipment and rule changes # of teams etc all contribute to different product on ice at different times.

It's a shame that Ron's puns are practically useless out of context because they are absolutely brilliant. It's hard to imitate them over the water cooler but they likely are the funniest, wittiest and most clever one liners on TV.
I'd be honest in saying that sometimes I swear in disgust at the TV at how good they are. I'm not sure how Don can keep his composure when his rants are capped off with such a suave delivery of punage.
Ron's verbal skills easily rival the prettiest goal or most brutal check for play of the day.

I watched the Wings/Sharks game tonight in the Joe. I was stunned to see that the announcer said that half of the fans left part way through the third. The remaining fans booed the Wings with the 2-0 loss. Unbelievable! Here we have a team that placed the top of the Western conference (again), who has just defeated a very good Calgary Flames team in round 1, and their fans abandon and boo them. What do they want? You would never see that in any Canadian home game. What's also bad is it was only 2-0. This was not a blow out by any means and a score that close, means the game is not over until the last 30 seconds, where the fan support could make a difference. I really feel for the Wings players who deserve better. Hockey Town? I don't think so.
